Pests and Diseases

Clematis wilt is a well known disease that can affect plants. This disease usually strikes just as the flower buds are about to open, the plant will suddenly appear as though it is suffering from a lack of water and the foliage will begin to die. If a clematis suffers wilt it is important to cut the plant right back to near ground level. The disease is caused be a fungi that is believed to enter the plant when damaged. Large flowering hybrids are the most common of the clematis species to be effected, and if this is a major problem the Alpinas and Macropetala varieties which are not affected could be grown.

Pest Control

Aphids - Greenfly and Blackfly - These pests gather at the growing tips and the underneath of leaves. The can spread diseases and distort flowers. They can be dealt with by using a insecticide, which is best applied in late evening when there is no risk of sun scorch. Certain insecticides may cause staining of flowers - insecticides based on permethrin are o.k. Primicarb is a selective insecticide that will control aphids whilst having no affect on some beneficial insects. A cheap, small hand sprayer with a capacity of 1 litre would be suitable to apply the spray.

Slugs - These pests can make a plant look unsightly, clematis are a favoured plant. They can be controlled by using slug pellets applied on a warm damp evening or whenever they become a problem.

Earwigs - These insects can sometimes be a problem, they will eat leaves and flowers. A general insecticide could be used.
