Clematis Care - Successful Growing |
It is a good idea to try to follow the recommendations and requirements of clematis in order to gain the full potential of the plant. I have listed certain points below which should help you achieve an attractive and satisfying plant:- 1) It is important to try and plant your clematis facing the aspect suggested. The reasons to this are - Certain clematis, for example Armandii would not favour a northerly exposed aspect, resulting in poor plant growth whereas a Montana would be quite happily tolerate such an aspect. Another reason for planting in a certain aspects is due to the fading of flower colours when facing into the sun 2) One of the most important things as with any plant is the necessity to provide the nutrients that are required. If you are prepared to feed your plants regularly you will have a much more rewarding show of flowers. Since clematis are quick growers their nutrient intake will be high. A liquid feed once or twice a week, when plants resume growth in the spring up until the flower buds begin forming is a good idea or a rose feed applied in spring. Once the flowering has ended weekly feeds can be given to encourage a second show of flowers. |
Requirements
3) Another equally important requirement is that of water. Clematis that are planted to grow through a tree or a shrub will be in competition for the water that is available. Clematis should be watered regularly and not just in hot weather. Young clematis that are newly planted could be lost in dry weather if watering is neglected. If plants do not receive enough water this as well as point two will also hinder the development of the flowers. 4) A general point made regarding clematis -the 'head' in the sun and the roots in the shade. Clematis do tend to favour the sun, however, the base of the plant at ground level should be shaded, using for example, a slate or tile. 5) Clematis can be grown in a variety of different ways as mentioned above. If plants are required to grow up a trellis or through a tree, it will be necessary to train the plant using string or wire It is not usually sufficient just to leave the plant to it's own devices as it will just grow along the ground. 6) Pruning clematis can be confusing for some people, but it is really not that difficult. The majority of clematis do not need pruning. There is a minority of clematis that include the large flowering Jackmanii varieties and all the Viticellas that are hard pruned. Hard pruning means cutting the stems back to within 2-3ft above ground level and above two healthy buds. A big mistake made by some people is their eagerness to hard prune what appears to be dead growth when the plant is dormant in the winter. Hard pruning clematis will result in the removal of the previous years growth and the main flush of flowers. In Feb/Mar all clematis can be pruned lightly to remove dead leaves so that the plant stems can be spread out and tied when training, for example through a trellis. If there is any doubt about pruning then don't bother.
