NATURE SPOT

2 Buzzards were seen flying in Burgess Hill on Sunday the 1st of October. The Common or European Buzzards (Buteo buteo) one male and one female were seen soaring together in a courtship display and landing in trees at a secret location in Burgess Hill. The buzzards were identified by a local Ornithologist and Falconer who said " Buzzards have not been seen in this part of England for about 50 years. Sometimes the odd one is spotted on a migratory flight south but this is usually very high up. The possibility of breeding cannot be ruled out, although there has been no sign of it this year, because they were obviously a courting pair, if they stay in the area they could breed next April.

The sightings of green parrots in and around the University of Sussex have now been identified as wild parrots regularily breeding in the area. They are managing to survive the cold winters by living off food put out in local gardens.

Great crested newts have been identified in the small pond on Royal George Recreation ground.

A pair of Peregrine falcons have settled on Brighton's tallest building. These, the largest falcon native to the British Isles have been frequently spotted on the 336ft-high roof of Sussex Heights, the 24-floor luxury residential tower block on Brighton seafront.

A nesting box has been put on the roof to encourage breeding. Many twitchers have already found out about Brighton's two Peregrines, and have set up equipment to watch the large birds swoop on the starlings which gather over the West Pier at dusk.
