Peavey VT Classic
(50W All tube combo)
The amp has two channels, "normal" and "bright". The bright channel has one
input, the normal channel has two, and there is a fourth input for "automix" (more
on this later). Each channel has its own gain which all feed into a three-band eq
then a master volume. The automix feature, when using the four-button
footswitch give you the ability to combine or
select the two channels.
The amp is powered by 2 6L6 tubes and a solid state preamp section.
The 6L6s give a nice tone and enough power for a small club.
The amp drives the two on-board 12" speakers which are connected to the amp
back panel by a 1/4" phone plug. There's a second speaker jack to add outboard
speakers. The onboard speaker impedance load seen by the amp is 8 ohms. The
connection of the on-board speakers to the amp via the phone plug is a great
feature, giving the player some flexibility for some add-on devices, such as a talk
box or a direct box off the speaker output.
The amp also provides line out and power amp in jacks for effects loops or direct
recording.
Two onboard effects, reverb and phase, are controlled via a reverb depth control
and the phase's rate and depth, all three on the front panel. The footswitch's
remaining two stomp switches turn on and off reverb or phase.
The cabinet is black tolex with a black grill. The signature lightning-bold logo is
framed at the center top of the grill by the two silver channels down the sides of
grill. The cabinet is open back with an easily removed top rear panel, making tube
changes very easy and convenient.
The automix is a bit confusing to use at first, and the proprietary footswitch could
be a bother if you need to lengthen the connection cord.
This amp is very quiet with only a minimal "swishing/swirl" sound when the phase
is on at full depth.
Either channel can be set to clean or overdrive by adjusting the combination of
gain and master output. The automix combines the channels to provide switching
between clean and overdrive.
The clean is clean and the overdrive is very warm and bluesy. If you want heavy
crunch, you'll be disappointed.
The phase is strong and easily controlled with a pretty wide range of sounds. The
spring reverb is good, but pretty one-dimensional. If you want a wide variety of
reverb sounds, you'll need an outboard effect.
The automix and combinations of gain and master will take a lot of experimenting
and adjusting to get a balanced output volume, but it's well worth the play time.
This is an awesome sounding amplifier.
Epiphone Telecaster, built by Gibson. One Humbucker at the neck,
a single coil at the bridge, three-way swith, volume and tone control.
Alder body, natural finish.
That beauty does look like a Fender from afar, but pick it up and
be amazed by the typical Gibson feel. This guitar is much havier than the
Fender equivalent. And that is true for the sound as well. The wide
soap bar like neck pickup is extreme powerfull and fat. The sound is comparable
to my Gibson LP, but somewhat less deep, sort of yangelier. In comparism to
the Fender Tele of a friend it sounds fat, fat, fat. The Fender Tele sounds
like a country fair cheapo by comparism.
The bridge pick up is a Di-marzio type single coil, again much louder, than the
Fender. With the treble wide open it is almost too clear and really shows
the bell type sound qualities of older Fender Telecasters.
In the middle position, the sound is very much like the sound one would hope
to get from an acoustic six string, when playing rhythm.
Often, I play it through that little Samick Amp (also on the Web)
and the combination of the high output Guitar and the 10 semiconductor Watts
are getting me a long way to happiness, even at gigs down the local,
that I sometime attend on the motorbike. But plug it into your old valve
burner and feel it sing!
I like this guitar particularly, because of the simple achievement
of three indeed very different voicings by just a flip of a switch.
The finish of the guitar is natural Alder. A fine wood streak gives
this instrument a sort of biological, organic look.
Overall, I would attribute the qualities of this Guitar firmly
to the Gibson family of sounds. That clearly comes by virtue of the
Maker. Rather funny though, that Epiphone (Gibson) ever embarked
on taking on their main rival by producing a lookalike with
exchanged genetics. A nice attempt, that produced a very interesting
instrument.
