| The Childminding Network scheme
comprises a group of registered childminders, trained and supported by our co-ordinator so
that they are able to offer their services to parents/carers of children with a learning
disability. The scheme co-ordinator 'matches' the childminder with the child, and offers
ongoing support and training. To date we have successfully matched over 50 childminders with children. We are always training new childminders to top up our pool and have recently received funding to provide a service for children with profound and multiple disabilities and complex health needs. The scheme is indicative of the sort of project that Bromley Mencap operates. The idea came originally from the membership, and is now a fully funded project. Not only does it benefit the child, but the parent also gets some respite, to go to work, to shop, to do all the little jobs he or she cannot do with the child around, or just to be alone for a while. Respite is underrated - without it, people can often be driven to breaking point. With a little respite now and again, the same people can move mountains. |
