Royal Mencap Society

Bromley Mencap is affiliated to the Royal Mencap Society.

Mencap is the largest charity in Britain working on behalf of people with learning disabilities and their families.

Founded over 50 years ago by a group of concerned parents, Mencap today manages around 500 residential homes offering supported living accommodation in ordinary houses to nearly 3,000 people.

Its employment service has made over 6,000 training and work placements for people with learning disabilities in the last ten years.

Three specialist residential further education colleges for people with learning disabilities offer a curriculum covering personal and social development, basic skills and training with access to national vocational qualifications.

A wide range of community based leisure facilities are available through a nationwide network of clubs. These clubs have a current membership of around 45,000 supported by 20,000 volunteers.

Mencap spent over £65 million in 1994/95 on the provision of services to people with learning disabilities and their families.
