Our Service
--
is provided free of charge by teams of volunteers
working from two recording centres across the city.
Our listeners receive a weekly English language C90
cassette with 45 minutes of news selected from local newspapers, and a 45 minute
magazine with a wide range of longer items of general interest, including
occasional interviews.
Within the UK, cassettes are delivered free as first class
mail under the Royal Mail’s ‘Articles for the Blind’ concession. Listeners
have up to a week to listen to the cassette before returning it in the pouch
supplied. An international ‘Articles for the Blind’ service is also
available.
Three news editions (North, Central and South) are
produced, reflecting events around the city: a magazine edition is featured on
the reverse of each tape, and a separate monthly cassette of readings by a
local drama group is available to complete our output.
At the end of the news recording sessions, cassettes are
duplicated on high-speed copiers: in all, we despatch some 600 tapes each week.
The titles we read from include the Birmingham Post,
Birmingham Evening Mail, Sunday Mercury, Forward, and Birmingham News. Our North
edition also sources from Sutton Coldfield News, Sutton Observer, Sutton on
Sunday and The Sunday.
The
service is
open to anyone
with an
impairment
making normal reading
techniques impracticable.
