Brief Biography of Ashin Nanikabhivamsa
Born of parents Mr. U Ohn Maung and Mrs. Daw
Hnin Yee at Phalankhon Village, Ye U Township, Sagaing Division, Burma
(Myanmar) on February 11, 1964. (Given name: Nyan Oo Maung.)
Studied monastic education at age 7 and
ordained as a novice monk in December 1977. Assumed Buddhist monastic name
Ashin Nanikabhivamsa, Received higher ordination, and became a Buddhist monk on
May 19, 1983. Admitted to the Chanthagyi Pali University at Ye U, Masoeyein
Pali University in Mandalay and Panditarama in Rangoon and graduated in 1996.
Was awarded Sasanadhaja
Dhammacariya (Masters) degree in Buddhism by the Government of
Burma. Studied insight meditation at the Panditarama Sasanayeiktha in Rangoon
(Yangon).
Taught Buddhism to members of the Sangha
(Brotherhood of Buddhist monks) and Nuns in Mandalay and Rangoon for 7 years.
Served as an assistant meditation teacher at the Panditarama Sasanayeiktha in
Rangoon for the period of 1993 to 1998.
Came to USA in February 15, 1999 at the
request of the Tathagata Meditation Center, San Jose, CA. Moved to Mettananda
Vihara (the Monastery) Fremont, CA. at request of Myanmar American Buddhist
Association. Currently serving as a resident monk by teaching Meditation and
Burmese language at the Monastery of Myanmar American Buddhist Association,
4619 Central Ave., Fremont, CA.
