The New Award Regulations

The Grampian & Cairngorm Panel now expects all groups using our area to adhere to the new expedition regulations of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The new regulations combine the old options of expedition and exploration into one new flexible expedition activity.

Although the new regulations make the Award more flexible for participants there are also some important implications that should be considered. The stipulation of hours of activity, as opposed to set distances, has effectively ended the common practice of starting late or stomping along to finish in the middle of the afternoon. Supervisors must now ensure their groups leave early and have enough planned activity to keep them occupied for the required hours. Groups travelling to the area from farther a field must seriously consider arriving the night before the venture to ensure they satisfy the hours of activity requirements on day 1 of the venture. Similarly groups should also consider staying an extra night on the last day of the venture before travelling home.
