Canoeing The River Spey is one of the finest rivers in the UK and is world famous for many things including it’s crucial role in the Whisky industry. The river is also a top fishing destination and attracts many thousands of anglers every year to catch prized Scottish salmon. Running through some of the Scotland’s most beautiful scenery it is inevitable that the Spey is popular with outdoor water sports enthusiasts. With so many people using the Spey for such a wide variety of pursuits it is extremely important that all groups understand their responsibilities and ensure that everyone using the river is accommodated and conflicts avoided. The main area of concern for the Award is how to accommodate the increasing number of large canoeing groups who want to use the river without adversely impacting the economically important angling community. In recent years D of E groups have shown a steady increase from about one a year to about five this year. We would therefore ask groups to follow the guidelines outlined below; · If possible please use recognised camp sites that preferably have toilet facilities. · All candidates should have attained a standard of at least 3 star and be deemed competent enough to undertake the expedition. · All participants should be trained in the protocol and procedure for dealing with other river users and fishermen in particular.
