What you can do to help the Campaign for an elected House of Lords

Events at Westminster are moving quickly.  There will be debates on whether the second chamber should be abolished, or whether to move to reform, on Tuesday 6th March 2007.  The free vote on composition will be on Wednesday 7th March 2007 (with the Lords expected to vote in April).  So time is short.

Rally to support Lords reform

There will be a rally on Monday 26th February 2007 at 7pm, in the Grand Committee Room in the House of Commons, to support the call for reform and kick off the series of Parliamentary votes.  Speakers are being invited from all parties.  You are most welcome to come.  Please let us know by email (democratic_upper_house@hotmail.com) if you would like to attend.

Contact your MP

Why not write or email now to your MP, asking him or her where they stand, emphasising the importance of a legitimate and accountable second chamber, and urging him or her to support the most democratic option they can (and all the lesser or greater democratic options too)?

Write to your local paper

A short letter making the case will make a real impact locally before MPs vote.

Raise it in your local Labour Party

We will be writing to CLPs very shortly.  Constituency Labour parties and Labour members have been among the strongest supporters of reform.  Why not raise the issue, make members aware of the timetable, and urge them to support the democratic options?

Offer to help

If you can spare time for telephoning, writing letters, speaking to MPs and peers, or helping with the admin, we should be delighted to hear from you.  Please email us or use the attached form to reply.

Keep in touch

Please let us know the best email address to reach you on, and any other contact details you can give us.  Please reply today to democratic_upper_house@hotmail.com.  A form is attached.  And let us know your views on reform and the options before the Commons.

As well as our own website, Unlock Democracy (Charter 88 and the New Politics Network) have been running the Elect the Lords campaign, and co-ordinate a large number of groups across all the main parties.  Their website carries up to date news and will have a page devoted to the forthcoming votes at www.unlockdemocracy.org.uk
