KARST & CAVES of ROMANIA
Karst Areas in Romania.
- ANINA MOUNTAINS: The most important area in The Banat Mountains.
Many active, large, & well decorated caves. Buhui Cave (7.5km) being the
longest in the area.
- BIHOR MOUNTAINS: The most spectacular Karst of the Carpathians. The
Padis Plateau being the area to visit with a large density of Caves. Other
noted areas being, Crisului risings, Garda Valley, Sighistel Valley, Somesului
Cald risings & the Ponorului Fortress. Cave wise, you have the Scarisoare
Cave, with its underground glacier, Paraul Hodobanei Cave & Dealui Humpleu
being second & third longest in the country and to add to the areas status 7th
& 8th longest can also be found here, Valea Rea Cave & Pestera de la Zapodie.
Pestera Ursilor, being one of the few show caves in the country, and is well
worth the visit, especially to see the Cave Bear skeleton laid out in the end chamber.
- BUCEGI MOUNTAINS: The often pictured Ialomita cave with an old
church inside, accessed by road from south of the Ski resort town of Siniana
or by cable car/lift from Busteni can be found in this karst area, with many
other caves.
- CAPATANA MOUNTAINS: Another Monastic area where Monks are still
inhabit-ting some of the Caves in this very isolated & spectacular karstic
area. Cave of note Polovragi Cave at 10.35km
- CERNEI VALLEY: Picturesque area with many Caves, some noted as
being visited by tourists, but yet to note which. Important caves of the area
are, Lazului Cave (4.2km), Closani Cave (1.1km) & Izvernia Cave (1.5km).
- CLISURA DUNARII: Area by the Danube.
- CODRU MOMA MOUNTAINS: A few small caves in an interesting area,
caves of note Campeneasca Cave, Ponorul din Valea Teia & The Liliecilor Cave.
- DOBRUDJA LAND: An old Limestone plateau, containing the World
important site, Movile Cave with its new ecosystem. Limanu cave (4.2km) being
another cave of note in the area.
- MEHEDINTI PLATEAU: Important caving region of the country,
with some long caves, most noted being the Topolnita Complex (20.5km). Other
notable caves being, Bulba Cave (5.2km), Dealul Curecea Cave (4.5km), Epuran
Cave (4km) & Baluta Cave (1.2km)
- PADUREA CRAIULUI MOUNTAINS: The largest Limestone area in the
Carpathians, which includes Vantului (Wind Cave) the longest Cave in Romania
at about 50Km. Another of the few show caves of the country, is Meziad
Cave, with its huge entrance.
- PARANG MOUNTAINS: Large mountain area, with many small caves in an
interesting limestone area. The Muierii Cave being one of the most popular in
Romania.
- PODUL DAMBOVITEI: Leaota area; An area with gorges & small caves.
Dambovicioara cave being another tourist cave, often visited, but not
spectacular, in fact devoid of any formations. This cave was having a building
built below its entrance, probably a ticket hall. I did read the cave had been
extended, perhaps plans are afoot to open up same. Other noteworthy Cave
being, Ratei Cave with 7.8km of passage.
- RETEZATUL MIC: An area with potential for new discoveries on a wild
mountain. Caves of note, Ursilor Cave (from valea cu Brazi) Piatra Toplitei
Cave & Ladului cave (1.9km).
- RODNA MOUNTAINS: An area for the specialist speleologist, with the
long Tausoarele Cave, with 16.5km of passage the sixth longest in the countrybut
more importantly (fame wise) the deepest at 383m.
Others of note Jgheabul lui Zalion Cave (4.5km), Grota Zanelor.
- SUREANU MOUNTAINS: Or Sebes mountains, another important
speleological area, with caves of all types. Important Caves in the area, Sura
Mare Cave (9km) Ponorici-Cioclovina Cu Apa Cave & Bolii Cave.
- TRASCAU MOUNTAINS: A picturesque area, with small, easy caves. The
noted cave of the area being Huda Lui Papara.
- VALCAN MOUNTAINS: A Monastic area with many caves, some of which
are anthropic (man made). Darnimii Cave, claims the largest stalagmites in the
country, with some more than 10m in height. Other caves of note are Pirgavului
Cave (3.8km) & Alunii Negri Cave (3.2km).
- VRANCEA SUBCARPATHIAN HILLS: Famous area for the second biggest
saltcave in the world, not sure of other Karst features in the area.
