With the rapid expansion in recent years of  Information Technology, the demand for people with the relevant I.T. skills has grown too.  However the supply of such qualified people has yet to meet the demand and the "I.T. Skills Gap" has developed.  Many people work with I.T. at some level or other and as such may get further involved with the industry, especially as the rewards can be so great.

An ongoing problem with the I.T. Skills Gap is that the ever increasing pace of technological development doesn't wait for people to catch up. If someone was proficient in a technology only a matter of months ago, they would still have to keep on top of current developments to have their skills stay current. As such many I.T. professionals are constantly upgrading their skill level at great cost.

According to the department of Education & Employment's I.T., Communications and Electronics Skills Strategy Group report there are 800 I.T. qualifications currently available, a number which they feel needs to be reduced so that "businesses and students are clear about the currency and value of each qualification".

The Department of Education and Employment I.T., Communications and Electronics Skill Strategy Group Site has further information on the I.T. skills gap within the U.K.

This site aims to clarify a route to gaining the right skills to fill the gap, as gaining the relevant skills can demand high wages and put the qualified individual at the forefront of  technological development.
