P1 Bulk Density of pavers

Bulk density of finished products is mainly used to calculate the weight of products for haulage purposes.

Density is slightly more relevant when comparing ceramic clay bodies. Bulk density itself is the rstio of the mass of material to its bulk volume and can be expressed as:-

                                                                   Ma                        *     D

                                                                Mc-Mb

Where

Ma is mass of dry test piece

Mb is mass of test piece after been soaked and suspended in immersion liquid

Mc is  Mass of test piece soaked and suspended in air

D is the density of immersion liquid at the temperature of the test

For heavy clay products, a simpler test may be used by dividing the specimens mass (Kg) by its measured volume (m3) to give density expressed in Kgm-3.

Similar ratios include: -

Bulk volume                          =              (Mc   - Mb) /  D

Apparent solid volume       =              (Ma – Mb) / D

Apparent solid density       =              (Ma / ( Ma – Mb)) * D
