P3 Dimensions

For standard clay bricks and pavers the dimensional tolerances are specified over the average size of 24 bricks, usually measured in one complete length or in two sets of 12 units. The specification on bricks equates to Length +/- 75 mm, Width +/- 45 mm and Height +/- 45 mm, tolerances for paves tend to be a little tighter.

According to BS3921: 1985 the external sizes of standard bricks should be: -

Coordinating size of length 225 mm, width 112.5 and height 75 mm. The work size should be length 215 mm, width 102.5 and height 65 mm.

This can be expressed for 24 bricks as:-

Work Size

Minimum measurement of 24 bricks (mm)

Maximum measurement of 24 bricks (mm)

215

5235

5085

102.5

2505

2415

65

1605

1515

Some manufacturers tend to have an architectural range witch more than fulfills these tolerances.

Limits of size for pavers are laid out in BS6677 : Part 1 : 1986 and divided into two main categories, Type PA and Type PB.

Work Size

Minimum measurement of 24 pavers – Type PA (mm)

Maximum measurement of 24 pavers – Type PA (mm)

Minimum measurement of 24 pavers – Type PB (mm)

Maximum measurement of 24 pavers – Type PB (mm)

The maximum and minimum limits can be calculated using the two tables above, i.e. for a work size length  of 215 the minimum would be 215 * 24.35 = 5085 mm and the maximum would be 215 * 23.65 = 5235 mm for type PA pavers.
