FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
WHAT IS CIRCLE DANCING? Circle dancing is based on traditional folk dances
from around the world, although some modern choreographed dances have been
introduced. Most dances do not require a partner, but both men and women take
part and enjoy the dance. Dances are taken from all traditions, for example:
Amerindian, Greek, Serbian, Israeli, Romanian, Indian, Irish, Scottish and
even, English.
WILL I MAKE A FOOL OF MYSELF? An experienced teacher walks through every dance
before it is performed. Most dances have very simple, repetitive steps that do
not require any real dancing knowledge. The groups are really friendly, we all
make mistakes, and it's not a competition. It's just good fun, and healthy
exercise into the bargain.
WILL I BE THE ONLY MAN? Men, although you will be outnumbered by the ladies
at the moment, you will not be the solitary male, and the more men who come
along, the more like the traditional dance. So, ladies, bring your husbands,
partners, male friends with you!
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? It is not a fashion show, and unfortunately, most
don't have the lovely traditional costumes that these dances are performed in
their home countries. Any loose clothing is suitable; just wear what you are
comfortable in. You don't need special dancing shoes either, in fact quite a
few dance in bare feet or socks!
DO I HAVE TO JOIN? NO! There is no membership, and we only charge
enough to cover the expenses of each event. There is no commitment. Come to the
dances when you can, and if you can't make it, well, we'll see you next time.
HOW DO I START? If you have never done circle dancing before, you
will be made especially welcome. You can just come along to any of the dance
days. For more information, you can ring Jenny on 01360 770497 or Caroline on
01360 440212, or if you cannot reach them, fill in our Feedback Form and we'll
get back to you.
