Photo Gallery - Railways 3

Steam locomotives had been replaced by diesels and electrics on British Railways before I became an enthusiast. In consequence, I am not so interested in "kettles" as some people. Nevertheless, I have seen them occasionally, so here are a few pictures for your entertainment.

I claim no significant expertise on these matters, so if you think that my captions are incorrect, you may be right, and if you want to add any useful details, that would be welcome. Please e-mail me with the information. If I use it, and you tell me your home page address, I'll credit you, and include the link in return for your help.

This is a Great Western Railway "5700-class" 0-6-0 pannier tank locomotive, number 7760, seen on the turntable at the Birmingham Railway Museum, on 4 Oct 1987. This one is (or at least was, when I took this photo) a resident at the museum.

As an aside, G W R locomotives retained their numbers when taken into British Railways' ownership in 1948, whereas locomotives of other companies were renumbered. The reason for the apparent special treatment is that it saved money - the G W R provided cast cabside number plates for its engines, whilst the other companies used transfers (decals) or painted numbers, which were much easier to change.

Thanks to Steve Blighton for providing additional information about the above.

Another G W R engine - this time "4073-class" 4-6-0 7029 Clun Castle. Like the previous locomotive, this one was photographed at the Birmingham Railway Museum on the same day, and is (or was) also based there. The "Castles" were designed by Collett, as were the 5700 pannier tanks. One distinction of this particular locomotive is that it worked the last London (Paddington) to Birmingham (Snow Hill) express to be hauled by steam.
This is former London & North Eastern Railway locomotive number 1264, pictured at Rothley (on the preserved Great Central Railway) on 29 June 1997.

On this occasion, this locomotive had been hired by someone for driver training. Sounds like a fun way to spend a day to me...
