Now, you don't see that sort of thing very often...

Have you ever wondered what happens when you drop a laptop PC with a colour liquid crystal screen? Well, wonder no longer. Here's a picture of a cracked liquid crystal screen on a Compaq LTE 5000. I have a number of comments to pass. 1) Good job it wasn't my computer. 2) Good job it wasn't me who did it. 3) Good job my firm has a maintenance contract for these things.
Do you believe the name of this cathedral architect? No? I thought not.
In Birmingham, which is my original home city, there is a sculpture near the International Convention Centre which looks as if it is made of cold custard. Does anyone know why?
Another mishap. Someone left this can of fizzy drink in a refrigerator, which wouldn't have been a problem, but the temperature setting was on "coldest", and this can was right next to the freezing element. The can exploded, and you can see the effect on the can, but you'll have to imagine the effect on the refrigerator and its contents. The force of the explosion (even though this can was shielded by several rows of other cans) was sufficient to force the refrigerator door open - don't try this at home!
I think this is a particularly attractive picture, especially as its subject is the sort of thing that most people wouldn't even look at, let alone photograph. These shimmering jewels are in fact drops of rainwater on an oily wooden railway sleeper, caught in the sunshine. To give an impression of scale, the field of view in this picture is about 30 cm by 20 cm. What attracted me to this was that usually one sees rainbow effects in droplets of water which are mixed with oil, but here, almost all the droplets seem to have individual but fairly even colours.

This picture was taken on 9 April 1998, at Bristol Temple Meads station.

98g31635.jpg (14391 bytes) On this subject, you may have heard people say it rains everywhere in Britain. Well, that just isn't true, as this picture shows - there's plenty of room between the raindrops!
