Photo Gallery - Railways 2

The photographs below were taken in France in May 1996, during the Basingstoke and District Railway Society's annual overseas trip. If you'd like to see more pictures from that trip, click here.

A TGV-R set at the head of a northbound morning service about to depart from Lyon Part-Dieu on 5 May 1996. There are several varieties of TGV trains. The earliest sets were delivered for the Paris-Lyon service, and are distinguished by their orange livery. Later sets, built for the Atlantique service, and network services all over France have the silver livery shown here.
A refurbished class X2720 two-car diesel multiple-unit set at Lyon Part-Dieu. The refurbishment of these units included lengthening because the entire cab assembly was replaced with more modern equipment. Although these units date from the mid 1950's, the new cab style is very similar to that of the X2200 series, built 30 years later. New units from old! These units are based at Lyon Vaise, but often work between Nīmes and Clermont-Ferrand.

"Z2" two-car electric multiple-unit set no. 9502 at Lyon Perrache - the older of the two main stations in Lyon. This is a dual-voltage set, capable of operating from a supply of either 1,500V dc or 25,000V ac.
"Z2" two-car electric multiple-unit set no. 7505 arriving at Tournon-Tain l'Hermitage on a northbound service for Lyon. This is almost identical to the design in the previous picture. The difference is that this type is only equipped to run on a 1,500V dc supply.
Electric locomotive 16031 at the buffer stops in Lille Flandres station. Flandres is a terminus station, and in addition to local services for that part of Northern France, it also handles terminating trains from Paris Nord. Some of the Paris services are operated by TGV-R sets. (The other main station in Lille, Europe, is used by TGV and Eurostar trains serving Paris, Marseille, Brussels and London.) The BB 16000 class were formerly the mainstay of the Paris Nord services.
Electric locomotive 16541 at the head of a local service at Lille Flandres. Although dating from the same time as the BB16000 class (late 1950's/early 1960's), locomotives in the BB16500 class are smaller and much less powerful.
Yet another different type of electric locomotive, this time number 9629, seen at Avignon. The BB9600 class was rebuilt for push-pull working from the BB9400 class during the ealy 1990's, but otherwise these locomotives date from the same period as the previous two types. As it happens, 9629 has just propelled a train in from Nīmes, so the push-pull gear is clearly in good order!
Here's X2800 series "Massif Central" diesel railcar number 2825 at Le Puy-en-Velay, just before working a lunchtime service to Clermont Ferrand. It's interesting to compare these units which retain their original cabs with the rebuilt units in the X2720 series - shown above.
