Mediaeval Monuments - Whitfield (Glossop)

Whitfield is a township which has now been absorbed by the southern expansion of Glossop in Derbyshire.

During the mediaeval period, from 1157 to the late 15th century, the lordship rights over the lands around Glossop belonged to Basingwerk Abbey in North Wales. The monks set up crosses at a number of locations around Glossop to mark the boundaries of the area they held. One of these crosses stood at Whitfield. It is no longer to be seen, having been taken down and reused for building material. However, a street in Whitfield is still called Whitfield Cross, to commemorate the ancient boundary marker.

There are six mediaeval boundary crosses around Glossop.
Starting at the top right, and proceeding clockwise, these are:
Lady Cross, Old Glossop Cross, Whitfield Cross, Charlesworth Cross (also known as the Abbot's Chair),
Robin Hood's Picking Rods and Hadfield Cross
