Reflexology is a modern
development of an ancient art of healing with a documented history
of over 5000 years. The Practitioner acknowledges that all body
systems are reflected as a miniature mirror image within the sensory
organs such as the ear (as utilised in auricular acupuncture)
and in the extremities such as the feet, hands and head These
replicated images provide an accurate means of assessing and effecting
the healing in the associated tissues.
Early in the
20th Century an American ENT Consultant used this practice for
pain relief finding that distal trigger points were related in
a longitudinal zone. This he called 'zone therapy'. Reflexology
evolved from this and is the more usual practice of western practitioners,
that of 'working along the zone' in a set order using an alternating
pressure.
Christine
Jones, a Chartered Physiotherapist, trained in Reflexology
in 1971, adapted the treatment to the particular needs of the
more sensitive patient. Instead of the zonal method, the reflected
systems of the body were treated in an order respecting the naturopathic
principles as used in massage, and those proposed by the Eastern
philosophy in the law of Five Elements. This ensured an essential
individual procedure according to constitution, pathology, personality,
response and time available. Reflextherapy is this individually
tailored, gentle but in-depth approach.
The Midland
School of Reflextherapy and Associated Studies was established
in 1976 to teach this approach to health care professionals.
