The Scottsboro accused, with their lawyer Samuel Liebowitz, in jail, March 1933

This case is widely believed to be one of the most extreme examples of injustice in the deep south of the USA.
In 1931 nine teenagers were arrested in Alabama and accused of gang rape. Known as 'The Scottsboro Boys' they were Haywood Patterson, Charles Weems, Clarence Norris, Andy Wright, Ozzie Powell, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, Willie Roberson, and Roy Wright.
At one point eight of them were sentenced to death but following a re-trial some were released. Others however remained in jail, in appalling conditions, until 1950. The photo shows them in jail in 1933 with their lawyer Samuel Leibowitz.
