A year in Guyana
On 23 February 2002, five men escaped from the Camp Street jail. In the course of a violent year, these deaths have been recorded:
February 23:
Troy Williams, prison officer, killed during Camp Street jail escape. The five men who escaped are Andrew Douglas, Troy Dick, Dale Moore, Shawn Brown and Mark
Fraser.
March 10:
Errol ‘Taps’ Butcher wounded in a drive-by shooting on America Street
in the city. He died two days later.
March 16:
Paul Hardeo, Berbice businessman, stabbed to death by masked bandits.
April 2:
Leon Fraser, Police Superintendent, shot and killed on the Linden-Soesdyke
Highway.
April 6:
Shaka Blair killed by police.
April 13:
Gavin Sobers, aged 17, shot dead in a house at Bachelor’s
Adventure, East Coast Demerara.
April 15:
Policeman Harry Kooseram killed on his way to work at the Vigilance
Police Station, East Coast Demerara.
May 6:
Mark Anthony Sancho, U.S. based Guyanese, shot dead on Mandela.
May 11:
Ramdeo Persaud and Sita Persaud, of Annandale, East Coast
Demerara shot dead by bandits in their bedroom.
May 16:
Chaitram Etwaru, security guard, shot to death by armed bandits at Jairam’s General Store on Saffon Street.
May 25:
Sherwin Alleyne, policeman, shot when two gunmen ambushed and opened fire on a police patrol at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara. He died some days later.
May 30:
Andy Atwell, policeman, killed when two carloads of gunmen opened fire on the Alberttown Police Station.
June 1:
Ramnauth Persaud, the cashier/accountant at Commerce House Cambio on Regent Street, killed by bandits.
June 6:
Compton Cambridge, wanted man, killed in shootout with police at Nabaclis, East Coast
Demerara.
June 8:
Monica Rodrigues, businesswoman, of B.V., East Coast Demerara, strangled during an
armed robbery.
June 13:
Claudette Ng-See-Quan, businesswoman, shot dead when a large band of bandits invaded a Vergenoegen residence.
June 14:
Rawle Thomas, police officer, shot in the mining
town of Linden. He died of his wounds a few days later.
June 27:
Mohamed Kayan Baksh, former sugar worker, shot dead in an attack by five
armed gunmen at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
July 9:
Carlyle Wickham, security guard, killed at Cummings Lodge, East
Coast Demerara.
July 11:
Adrian London, police detective, shot dead execution-style on Joseph
Pollydore Street, Lodge.
July 15:
Oyama Butcher shot dead in Albouystown, Georgetown.
July 21:
Ramphal Pardat, police constable, shot dead. He was apparently taken at gunpoint from the police outpost at Rose Hall by armed bandits with AK-47 assault rifles, then shot near the seawall.
Outar Kissoon, policeman, shot dead when he and a party of
policemen responded to the attack.
Balram Kandhi killed when the vehicle in which he was
travelling through the town. was riddled with bullets.
Mohan Latchman, aged 72, collapsed and died during the assault.
July 25:
Leroy Lowe, taxi driver, and wanted man Kwame Pindleton killed in
shootout on University of Guyana road.
August 22:
Fung-A-Fat, dentist, found murdered in his New Amsterdam clinic.
August 24:
Vibert Inniss, deputy head of CANU, executed by gunmen while sitting in his
car at Buxton.
August 26:
Andrew Douglas, one of five men who escaped from the Camp Street Jail on
February 23, 2002, was found shot dead in the back seat of a hijacked car
at Farm, East Bank Demerara.
August 27:
Feroze Bashir, policeman, shot dead at Buxton.
August 28:
Unnamed man set ablaze during robbery at Non Pareil, ECD. He later died.
September 6:
Leyland October, police inspector, shot dead at Sussex and Russell
Streets, Charletown.
September 8:
Ryan Richards shot dead behind Brickdam police station.
September 9:
Delon Accra, wanted man, killed after hijacking a car.
September 10:
Emmanuel Wright and Junior Liverpool shot dead by police at Republic Park entrance, East Bank Demerara, after robbing a city gas station.
September 12:
Johniel Wilson, taxi driver, found dead on the embankment road at
Ogle, East Coast Demerara. Wilson’s car was believed to have been
hijacked.
September 19:
Two people killed by gunmen in Albouystown.
September 25:
Joy Arjune, Lloyd Singh, Gavin Naraine and Fazeer Baksh shot dead in Natoo’s Bar in Kitty. Among the 10 injured
was Director of Public Prosecutions, Denis Hanomansingh, possibly the intended target of assassination. Just minutes
before that shooting, a teenager, Dellon Gomes, was gunned down in Craig
Street, Campbellville.
September 26:
Gunman shot dead by members of the Guyana Defence Force after a large gang fired on the Vigilance Police Station.
September 27:
Two men die after gunmen blast a car at Buxton.
A Buxtonian was later found dead in the village.
September 30:
Unnamed taxi driver shot dead in front of Johnny ‘P’
Supermarket.
October 1:
Joel Duncan shot dead by police in the Kitty cemetery after robbing a driver at gunpoint.
October 6:
Ina Croal Vermeeren was killed after shots were fired from an
overtaking car at Turkeyen, ECD.
October 11:
Shawn Welcome, wanted man, shot and killed after grabbing a policeman’s rifle.
October 16:
Orin Shultz and Gladwin Fecker were shot dead outside a video shop on
Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge.
Unnamed minibus passenger killed after a gunman opened fire on the Buxton/Friendship Public Road.
October 18:
Claudius Sam, one of several men suspected of the 1998 America
Street murder of businessman Neville Sarjoo, was gunned down in front of
his First Street, Alberttown home.
October 24:
Unnamed man, father-in-law of the owner of an Eccles general store, dies of heart failure following robberty by five armed bandits.
October 27:
Camaldeo Ganesh, missing East Coast man, found dead in Buxton backdam.
October 28:
Mark Fraser and Dale Moore, two of the prisoners who escaped from jail on February 23rd, and five others, killed in separate shootouts in the city and along the East Coast
Demerara.
Franklyn Solomon, ex-cop, gunned down in Annandale.
Charred remains of a man found in burnt car at Buxton.
October 29:
Melroy Goodman, 'wanted' man, killed in a shootout with the police.
Bystander killed in the crossfire.
October 30:
Motilall, farmer, kidnapped by teen gunmen who demanded $20M as ransom. He was found dead a few days later.
November 4:
Five persons shot dead at the corner of Robb and Light Streets; and a would-be bandit shot dead in Middle Road, La Penitence.
November 5:
Dorothy Williams and Adrian Green shot dead during a police operation
at D’Urban St, Wortmanville.
November 11:
Joel Evans of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara gunned down outside
Charlestown bakery.
November 12:
Randolph Chapman killed in Buxton. Unnamed person found shot to death at Melanie, ECD.
November 14:
Premkumar Sukraj, wanted man known as ‘Inspector Gadget’, shot dead in Middle
Road, La Penitence.
November 17:
Mark Rutherford found shot dead, floating in canal behind Annandale.
November 23:
Unnamed person killed by gunmen in Buxton.
November 28:
Brandon James, suspect, killed following police raid on a Subryanville safe house.
Nov ember 29:
Two men shot dead in Albouystown.
December 3:
Quincy James, traffic policeman, killed in the city when a large gang of gunmen embarked on a shooting spree.
December 15:
Shiek Tufail, Phillip Reynolds and Winston Richards killed in a shootout with the police.
December 18:
Heeraman Sahadeo, carpenter of Mon Repos, ECD, kidnapped. To date, the young man has not been released.
December 19:
16-year-old Marlon Joseph was killed in barbershop.
