Flashback to 1953
June 2003 was the 50th anniversary of the climbing of Everest. Although hailed as an achievement of the British organisers, the expedition would not have been possible without support from the local people, the Sherpas.
Tensing Norgay, a Sherpa was first to the top with Edmund Hillary. In 1953 the media disparagingly referred to him as 'Sherpa' Tensing - though Edmund Hillary was never called New Zealander Hillary.
The picture on the right shows an unknown local person. He and other Sherpas carried huge amounts of supplies and equipment for the Europeans. They were paid off with a few rupees, as can be seen by the receipt below.
