In his book, 'Guns, germs and steel', Jared Diamond claims that food production developed independently in five areas of the world - shown on this map: · China · Mesoamerica · Fertile Crescent · Eastern US · Andes. He says that there are five additional areas (marked ?): · West Africa · Ethiopia · Amazonia · West Africa · New Guinea Food production may have developed independently in these places as well, although it possible that people here learned these skills from peoples in the five areas where there is strong evidence for independent origination.  |
