Bahamai Soren and Nanka Hembrom were burned to death on Wednesday 2nd July 2003. Jhalo Devi died on 5th July 2003.
Tribal women burnt to death
Two tribal women were burnt to death in public by Mahuasosle and Auratand villagers in Godda district yesterday on charges that they practiced witchcraft.
The panchayat held these women, to be witches, and responsible for the protracted illness of a villager and set fire on them. The Godda Superintendent of Police, however, said the women were beaten to death first and then burnt. The two have been identified as Bahamai Soren and Nanka Hembrom. According to the SP, the husband of the Bahamai Soren, has filed an FIR against 11 persons, prime among them being Munshi Soren, who usually calls the shot, and 50 other persons of the villagers.
He said that action would be taken against all those named in the FIR. (The Hindu, 3 Jul 2003)
3rd woman killed in Jharkhand

With the death of yet another woman reported from Devabandha village under Poraiyahat police station of the district, the number of women killed on allegations of witchcraft practice has risen to three so far in Jharkhand's Godda district in the last three days.
According to a report, one Anoopal Sah, resident of Devabandha village of Godda district stormed the house of his aunt Jhalo Devi on Friday night and thrashed her badly branding her a witch. Jhalo Devi, a widow, was later admitted to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries today.
It may be recalled that Bahamay Kisku (35) and Nanka Hembrom (50), two women belonging to Santhal Pargana region of the state, were burnt alive on Wednesday morning by a mob after a meeting concluded that the duo was responsible for using black magic on a co-villager Anant Hansda and awarded the death sentence.
