Dear Boss, please explain
When I am born, I am black
When I grow up, I am black
When I go out in the sun, I am black
When I am cold, I am black
When I am embarrassed, I am black
When I am jaundiced, I am black
When I am ill, I am black
When I decompose, I am black

but you!
When you are born, you are pink
When you grow up, you are white
When you are ignorant, you are green
When you go out in the sun, you are brown
When you are cold, you are blue
When you are embarrassed, you are red
When you are jaundiced, you are yellow
When you are ill, you are off-colour
When you died, you are purple
When you decompose you are black
And you have the nerve to call me coloured
Your loving garden boy, Sam.

Hope for the world starts with moral transformation where pride has been conquered by humility-love - whose characteristic is service and loving the unlovable. "In everything, do to others as you would have them to do to you." (Bible, Matthew 7:12)

This is an excerpt text from the sermon delivered by The Right Reverend Dr. John Sentamu, Bishop for the diocese of Birmingham, at his diocesan welcome service at Birmingham Hippodrome on Sunday December 1st 2001.
