The Treaty of Utrecht, 1713, gave Britain the right to deliver enslaved African people to Spanish colonies. The South Sea Company, set up for this purpose, was based in South Sea House - on the corner of Bishopsgate and Threadneedle Street.
Many people know about the 'South Sea Bubble', the crisis which occurred through over-investment in the Company, but its direct links with the slave trade are less well known.
