The Corporation of London is the local authority for the City of London. This is the original local government body for London, dating from the 1100s.
The Corporation of London has had close links with the transatlantic slave trade. For example, William Beckford, who was Lord Mayor of London, was also the owner of large sugar plantations in Jamaica.
Unlike the other London local authorities, which were granted control over territories outside the City walls, the Corporation is not accountable to local residents. Bodies such as the Common Council of the Corporation, which make the main decisions, consist of individuals chosen by business interests.
