Common Era dating is a way of representing dates which avoids associations with Christianity. Instead of AD (Anno Domini, or in the year of our lord), dates are followed by the initials CE, for Common Era.
The initials BCE (Before Common Era) are used to identify dates before the Common Era. It is a substitute for BC, or Before Christ.
