The Jubilee Walk Project is a joint venture between the Coronation LAT and the neighbouring Bournville LAT. With the project still very much in it's infancy, we have been fortunate to have received a grant from the final round of the SRB's Capital Chest Fund as the five year funding program for the area is due to end on the 31st of March 2002. The two LAT's between them have been awarded a grant of £20,000 with which we hope, in a short space of time embark on the beginning of what we hope to be an ongoing conservation project to enhance the area surrounding the Cross Rhyne that flows through the two estates.
Phase one will involve a huge tidy up of the footpath and bank adjacent to the Oldmixon Recreation Ground, home of Worle St. John's Football Club and Weston Youth Centre. It is hoped that we can create a pleasant seating area at the entrance to the "Walk" and restore the grass along the bank and reintroduce native plants to the area. Where the path crosses over the railway line we hope to clear overgrown brambles to make for better visibility thus making it a much safer route to walk, particularly at night. As the path makes it's way into the Coronation estate we shall continue removing accumulated debris and restore the bank. The path continues it's route along a narrow section of bank to the new Jubilee Park and in turn out onto the Bridgwater Road, although a public right of way, no path exists along this section and we hope to lay a proper path to allow all year round access.

All of the planned works will require the full consent of the Internal Drainage Board (IDB) and it is hoped to employ some of their own contractors to do much of the work, however it is after the first phase is complete that the hard work begins............
The primary duty of the IDB is to maintain a free flowing water course to prevent the flooding of low level land. Nearly all of the rhynes around the Weston-super-Mare area drain into the Cross Rhyne which in turn carries the excess water out to sea via the River Axe at Uphill, it is therefore essential that a high level of maintenance is carried out along this water course, this maintenance unfortunately can and does interfere with the ecology of the area. It is our intention to join forces with various conservation groups and hopefully to start a local group of our own to work with the IDB to find a compromise solution to the problems that arise from the annual "keetching" of the rhyne, i.e.. the removal of excess vegetation from the bank and waterline. If done too vigorously this can lead to the destruction of "welcome" plants and leave the banks barren with no undergrowth and only appears to encourage nettles and brambles the following year, we hope to carry out more research into this matter.
The rest of this page shows a selection of photos taken in recent years, they show the bank at it's best, before, during and after keetching, in summer and in winter, we'll let you form your own conclusions but welcome any comments or suggestions.
As the project progresses we will update these pages.
