I love dachshunds. You may know them as sausage dogs, their fantastic nickname - and literal, too, because what more is the dachshund than a dog shaped like a sausage? The way they walk, trotting to keep up with their owners on their lovely legs, (the dogs, that is, not the owners)! The way they look, (gorgeous, in other words), and the way they feel. To touch, soft and velvety.
Let me tell you the full story of how I started to love them; my grandma and grandad (on my dads side) used to have a dachshie. It (apparently, and from photos I can judge) was beautiful. Dead docile, but playful too, great with kids (as my dad was just a boy when they had it), and with adults alike. Jasper (the dogs name) was also a good choice due to his brother, Maximillion, being perfect for my great-grandma as it was peaceful, good company and could meet up with Jasper when the family got together.
When my gran and grandad first got him, they 'lost' him within a day. ("Where the hell is the bloody dog?", recalls grandad). After searching the whole house, they discovered him snuggled at the bottom of the bed. He used to gaze up at them, with his fabulously chocolaty eyes, and his owners told him off (although didn't have their heart in it!)
I was amazed when I heard of how well trained he was; after he'd taken my dad and my uncle for a walk in the fields, haystacks and surronding mud, he used to line up at the front porch, lift his paws up, and get my grandma to wipe them! "Then I used to rub his belly with a special tea-towel" she says.
When travelling, he hated cars, ("Although he was always first to jump in") and had to travel on my grandmas knee... and when gran used to cycle through the village, he loved being in the basket and poking out, as with shopping baskets or handbags! She remembers him snuggling in her handbag.
