"Pastoral

publisher in Indiana called Kingsley

This book is unique in the sense that the letters printed here are transcripts from the originals held in New College library. The letters
which appear in the biography by Bonar were partially edited for publication by McCheyne;
these, however, are the original, untouched, unedited letters. (pb. $4.99). ISBN

"From the Preacher's Heart" by Robert Murray M'Cheyne. ISBN 1-85792-025-2. (hb 536 pp). This is a reprint under a new title of "Additional Remains" which has been unavailable for over 150 years. I obtained my copy at £19.99 from Heath Christian Bookshop. The new edition is attractively produced with a modern typeface which makes it a real delight to read.
With a stimulating essay by Maurice Roberts, sixty-four of M'Cheynes sermons, . . . and four series of lectures, there is a wealth of evangelistic and devotional material there. These samples of M'Cheynes work are utterly Christ-centred. He incessantly pointed listeners, and now readers also, to Christ for eternal life and for sanctified living . . .This volume is therefore highly recommended to all, particularly as a devotional aid, and also to preachers as an abiding monument and yardstick of God-glorifying proclamation.
From the book review by Tim Trumper, Evangelism Today, January 1994.
A Basket of Fragments and From the Preacher's Heart are now available in Chinese.

"Biography of Robert Murray M'Cheyne - A Burning Light" by Alexander Smellie. ISBN 1-85792-184-4. (pb 250pp). I obtained my copy at £6.99 from Heath Christian Bookshop. In addition to the 9 main chapters by Smellie, the publishers have also included extracts from the diary of Jessie Thain, plus an account of the revival in Dundee written by Alexander Cumming. The book is very movingly written by one who clearly loved his subject. Smellie had access to the M'Cheyne manuscripts which are now at the New College Library. (The original work was published in 1913 by the National Council of Evangelical Free Churches: London.)
Quite literally and eagerly, M'Cheyne burnt himself out for the honour of Almighty God - dying at only 29. Tirelessly he had laboured for the conversion of unbelievers and the holiness of Christians . . . M'Cheyne becomes alive as his words are quoted. Sermons, prayers, voluminous correspondence, notes of pastoral interviews and visits, his Journal and Personal Examinations and Reformation - each gives insights into the spirituality, the unqualified commitment and the systematic methods of this godly, God-fearing and so multi-gifted minister . . . Additions to the 1913 volume (one of which only surfaced in 1955), written by close friends of M'Cheyne, give further instructive insights into the man, his ministry - and his God.
From the book review by Brian Dupont, Evangelicals Now, March 1996.
"Mission of Discovery : Journal of M'Cheyne and
Bonar's Mission of Inquiry" by Andrew A.Bonar; edited by Allan Harman.
Sub-title "The Beginnings of Modern Jewish Evangelism" (pb 448pp £9.99)
ISBN 1-85792-258-1. It contains a 14 page introduction by the editor, who is the
Principal and Professor of Old Testament at Presbyterian
Theological College in Melbourne, Australia.
Published in 1996, this is a new edition of "The Narrative of a
Mission of Inquiry to the Jews" first published in 1842 for details of which
see below.
This is truly a delightful read. It contains many wonderful descriptions of the places and peoples they visited, with much to interest the social historian. The ordinary Christian reader will find many useful and edifying allusions to passages of Scripture which were aptly illuminated by the travellers' observations. In many places they found a warm welcome among the Jews whom they visited, to some of whom it was a complete surprise to meet for the first time Christian ministers who expressed a deep love and concern for the Jews. Wouldn't it be great if this book could be translated into modern Hebrew?
NB. There is some text missing from the end of chapter 1 of the first CFP edition. Page 51 should continue as follows:
.......his body; nor could he see the evil of being born in sin, and having a wicked nature. We shewed him God's solemn declarations of man's awful guilt, and the free offer which he makes to him of pardon and a new heart. He was a kind, feeling, amiable man, one who seemed truly sincere, yet one who felt, like the young ruler, an invincible repugnance to the demands of the gospel. We gave him a French Bible, writing his name upon it, and our heart-felt desires for his salvation. He received it freely, and "went away sorrowful".
The heat was now very oppressive, and the cabin at midday was like an oven. About two o'clock in the afternoon, we came in sight of the low-lying shores of Egypt. The coast is very low indeed; and the country, as far as the eye can reach, flat and sandy. A land-mist arose over the sky as we approached the shore, drawing a veil over the sun, and thus moderating the intense heat. Our Albanian friend pointed to a row of buildings indistinctly visible, which he said were "Anemomulai", i.e. windmills. Sailing past the ancient Pharos, now no longer an island, we entered the harbour. We counted twelve ships of the line, belonging to the Pacha's fleet, resting majestically on the waters. They seemed to be beautifully equipped and fully manned. The appearance of the marines was striking, with their white cotton dress, red sash, deep brown faces, and glancing arms. Martial music resounded from every vessel. The crescent and star upon the red flag reminded us that we were now among the followers of the false prophet. Turning towards the shore, our eye rested with quickened interest on the graceful palm-trees, the camels slowly moving along the beach, and other indications of an Eastern clime, as the anchor dropped, and we prepared to land.

"Watching Unto Prayer" by Robert Murray M'Cheyne. (large pb. 80pp.) ISBN 0-90250-627-7. ( £3.95)
The contents of this book were first published in The Christian's Daily Companion 9th-22nd April in 1843, and first published in book form as Helps to Devotion in 1988, and reprinted in 1995. It contains 28 daily readings, starting with "Lightning from the East" and ending with "Take Earnest Heed to the Message".
The same items can also be seen online at the website for Sovereign Grace Articles. For a list of these see my own M'Cheyne links page.
"The Believer's Joy" by Robert Murray McCheyne. (pb. 128pp.) ISBN 0-90250-622-6. (£3.50).
This is based upon a book of seven devotional sermons which was first published in 1858. It was reprinted in 1968 by Knox Press (Edinburgh) to mark the 125th anniversary of his death, and subsequently by Free Presbyterian Publications in 1987. These pieces are among the rarer parts of M'Cheyne's literary remains. In addition to the original 7 items, it includes two further communion addresses plus The Cry for Revival.
"Robert Murray McCheyne was by no means a lone voice crying in the wilderness. The Evangelical Revival had led to the raising up of hundreds of faithful ministers, so that the pure Gospel was again preached from the majority of Scottish pulpits. Yet the names of comparatively few of these heralds of the cross have come down to our day, nor is there any significant record of the sermons they preached. It is a remarkable providence that almost the shortest-lived of these men should be by far the best known, and that a beautiful account of his life together with many of his sermons and other writings should have been preserved."

"Christian Preachers" by Nigel Clifford. Published in 1994 by Evangelical Press of Wales, Bryntirion, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan. (pb. 320p ; 21.5cm.) ISBN 1-85049-114-3. Thirty-one chapters on great preachers through the ages. "From the 'golden-mouthed' Chrysostom and Augustine to A.W.Tozer and Martyn Lloyd-Jones, from the fourth century to the twentieth, this book provides an introduction to the lives and achievements of 31 of some of the outstanding men of the Christian Church. As well as illustrious names such as Jonathan Edwards, Chalmers and Spurgeon, the careers of other lesser known servants of God are described, including such preachers as Adolphe Monod the Frenchman and the Welsh Walter Cradock, John Elias and Christmas Evans. It is not only biographical, but a book about preaching itself; its romance and relevance in all ages, its methods and modes, its power and priority. It offers also a bird'-eye view of some facets of the history of the Church up to the present day and of themes which are of enduring interest." [from the back cover]. Chapter 26 covers Robert Murray McCheyne (1813-43), and the following chapter William Burns (1815-68). Recommended.
"Classic Sermons on the Love of God" compiled by Warren W. Wiersbe. (pb. 64p.). ISBN 0-8254-4083-1. Published December 1999 in the Classic Sermons Series by Kregel Publications. On pages 57-64 this book includes Robert Murray McCheyne's sermon entitled "The Perfect Love of God to Us", taken from "Memoir and Remains....".
"The Preachers of Scotland - From the Sixth to the Nineteenth Century" by Dr. William Garden Blaikie has been republished in 2001 by The Banner of Truth Trust (350pp) ISBN 0-85151-805-2. This was first published as the Cunningham Lectures for 1888. It is a fascinating account of Scottish preachers & preaching from the time of St. Columba to the 1880s. It shows that in every age the deepest needs of the human soul are met by the unchanging gospel of Christ. Though M'Cheyne gets only two other passing references, the single paragraph describing his ministry is a quotation which was well worth reproducing here.
In December 1997, I discovered that Christian Classics had brought out some CD-ROM volumes containing many significant Christian books, including the full text of "Memoirs and Remains" mentioned above & below. This product looked very good value for pastors and teachers. The CDs were in Logos 2 Bible Software format. See Logos Research Systems, Inc for details of this format, which includes their top-brand electronic Bible.

"The Memoir & Remains of Rev. Robert Murray
M'Cheyne" by Andrew A. Bonar - first published in 1843. This title went into
many subsequent editions. The 1892 new edition (with appendices, facsimiles of writings,
etc) was used as the basis for the 1966 reprint by The Banner of Truth.
It was also published in both Dutch and Gaelic translations. For the very earliest editions,
the Memoir was also published separately without the Remains.
"The Additional Remains of the late Rev. R.M. M'Cheyne" - published in 1846. Republished recently with new title, "From the Preacher's Heart"
Both the above titles were first published in Edinburgh by William Oliphant & Sons.
What is thought to be the first American edition of Memoir and Remains was published in 1844 at Philadelphia, by the Presbyterian Board of Publication, (Paul T. Jones, Publishing Agent), and contained an Introductory Letter by the Rev. Samuel Miller, D.D. of the Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey.
The letter which acted as a preface was to the Chairman of the Publication Board, dated at Princeton Sept. 19, 1844, and stated that Miller received the book from abroad and that M'Cheyne had died "last year" and expressed Miller's desire to have the book published for the benefit of the American Presbyterian Churches. Miller then quoted extensively in his argument for publication from the Presbyterian Review and Rel. Journal, No. LXV, July 1844, Edinburgh. Miller summed up his argument for publication in the following sentence, "I write these lines, and recommend this work, my dear brother, under the deep impression that we cannot pray for a greater blessing to our beloved Church than that the mantle of this holy man may rest upon all our Pastors and Elders, exciting them to the zeal, the unceasing diligence and the entire consecration to their Master in heaven which were so conspicuous in his short course." I am grateful to Mrs Sue Graham, Hattiesburg, Ms. for providing this information, and for her permission to provide a transcript of the letter.
