Translations:

Andrew Bonar's Memoir of M'Cheyne was translated from English in the nineteenth century into both Dutch , Gaelic, German and Swedish.
More recently a number of smaller items of his have appeared in other modern languages.  It is to be hoped that this will continue.
This page contains links to translations of M'Cheyne's works already on the world-wide-web, and information about published translations.
I would be very pleased to learn about any new translation projects which may be planned or completed. Please email me if you know of such.

"Krishti Udha, e Vërteta dhe Jeta" is a translation into Albanian of M'Cheyne's 1836 sermon entitled, "Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life".  It appeared first on the old web-site of the Albanian Evangelical Mission. As AEM's new web-site omits this item, I have posted it here on my own site.

China Reformation Publishers translate and publish Reformed material for the Mainland of China.
One of their first translations was M'Cheyne's "A Basket of Fragments" and now they just completed "From the Preachers Heart".
Already they have published close to 40,000 copies of "Basket" and will begin printing the other title soon.    Please pray.
They have permission from Christian Focus Publications in Scotland to work with these titles.
"A Basket of Fragments" is already on their website under the button "sermons". Soon they'll also add "From the Preachers Heart".
Special software to display Chinese text is required to be able to display these on your web-browser, but this can be downloaded via a link from their home page.

On the website of China Christian Books, I found that one could download "A Faithful Ministry", 101 sermons by Robert Murray MacCheyne.

This report (98-04-22) written by J. van't Hul has been posted on the Kerkelijk Leven page in web-site of Reformatorisch Dagblad, a Dutch Christian newspaper.
It refers to David Yeaworth's PhD thesis and to the M'Cheyne manuscripts in [New College] Edinburgh.   These were described by Herman Krijgsman of the Gomaruscollege in Gorinchem.

Ljochtstriel - I recently discovered this poem - a very loose paraphrase of M'Cheyne's 'Jehovah Tsidkenu' - on the web-site of a Zuid Friesland periodical.
The title De HEERE onze Gerechtigheid is Frisian.  Though not detailed on the web-site, the translator was ds. J.J.L. ten Kate, and the poem was taken from "Het leven en de nagelatene geschriften van Robert Murray M'Cheyne".  The first verse reads,

Eens was ik een vreemd`ling voor God en mijn hart;

The original link is now broken, so a copy of the complete Dutch text is provided here.

In 1996, Arie Loonstra - composer and organist in the Netherlands composed a cantata based upon the poems of Robert Murray M'Cheyne.  The texts for this cantata were taken from a booklet published in 1993 by 'Den Hertog' in Houten, which went under the same name as the CD mentioned below. This booklet contained 28 of the poems by the Scottish pastor.   Rev. C.J. Meeuwse tranlated these poems from English into Dutch poems.  In total, 10 poems were used, which were ordered in a such a way as to picture spiritual growth. Central to the cantata is the poem "Children called to Christ". The four verses of this poem are sung by a bass-baritone. The message of this narrator is worked upon and answered by the choir, and once by a boy soprano. The choral music is available on CD under the title, "Liederen Sions", ie - Songs of Zion.  This is a recording of a choral performance in the Walloon Church in the Hague in May 1999.  Mr Loonstra has also composed a piece of music to accompany the translation of another of M'Cheyne's poems, "Come Holy Ghost", based upon a nineteenth century translation under the title "Kom, Heil'ge Geest" by the Dutch poet and preacher J.J.L. ten Kate [Kate, Jan Jacob Lodewijk ten] 1819-1889, and which is suitable to be sung to celebrate the Day of Pentecost (Pinksterfeest).

The National Library of Scotland lists an 1865 edition (viii, 364 p. ; 17 cm.) published Perth : D. Matheson ; Edinburgh : Tract and Book Society, 1865.

This is an on-line sermon on "The condition of the human heart and its cure", based upon the verse, "Il cuore è ingannevole più di ogni altra cosa e insanabilmente malato; chi lo può conoscere? Io, l’Eterno, investigo il cuore, metto alla prova la mente per rendere a ciascuno secondo le sue vie, secondo il frutto delle sue azioni" (Geremia 17:9,10).  It is posted on the web-site of Paolo Castellina's - Tempo di Riforma an evangelist based at Montaccio, CH-7605 Stampa, Svizzera [Switzerland].  There are many useful biblical and evangelistic resources in Italian on the same site, with links to other Reformed Evangelical sites in based Italy.

An online sermon on "To speak of hell is a demonstration of love", being a translation by Paolo Castellina from one of the Sermons of R.M.M'Cheyne which he preached in 1842, as published in English by The Banner of Truth Trust, Edinburgh 1993. The main website where this is posted is called Predica.

Seven M'Cheyne sermons translated into Japanese are available on-line at a web-site called Grapes, which also has some sermons by J.C.Ryle and one by C.H.Spurgeon.

Korean    new!.png (299 bytes)

South Korea is home to a vibrant Presbyterian church.   It came as no surprise, therefore, to discover a few references to Robert Murray M'Cheyne when I did a language-specific search using either Google or AllTheWeb.  Some of these results showed that there is a Korean version of his famous Bible Reading Calendar.

Norwegiannorway.png (204 bytes)

"Jesu Raab til syndere ; eller, Herrens omsorg for menneskets frelse" by Robert Murray M'Cheyne.  This book was published at Minneapolis in 1885, 1887 by O. M. Anderson. (322p. ; 19cm).  Holding libraries: Vesterheim, IA - Norwegian-American Museum; Balch, PA - Institute for Ethnic Studies Library.
An 1899 edition by the same publisher (279p. 21cm) was found in 3 more libraries. Information provided by OCLC FirstSearch.
Translating the Norwegian title into English, it becomes, "Jesus' call to sinners ; or, the Lord's concern for the salvation of mankind."
Although a work by this exact title is not known, it may well be based on M'Cheyne's sermon, "The Saviour's Tears over the Lost".

"Hold meget mer fast på budskapet" is a translation of M'Cheyne's sermon on Heb. 2:1-4, "Take Earnest Heed to the Message", which is posted on the website of "Det Gamle Evangelium" = "The Old Gospel" by a Lutheran in Norway.  There are several online sermons by Horatius Bonar listed on the same page.

Polish    new!.png (299 bytes)

I came across a web-page for a magazine called Searchlight, in which two issues contained items by McCheyne.  The page was headed, "Pragne przedstawic publikacje Searchlight "Swiatlo Zycia". (24 str. A5). Zainteresowani otrzymywaniem jej w formie drukowanej moga pisac na adres:  Pawel Cieslar, ul. Limanowskiego 5, 56-400 Olesnica, tel. 071/314-45-54."  The McCheyne references are:

Tom 1, numer 5 containing "Janowa wizja Jezusa w chwale - Robert Murray McCheyne"

Tom 4, numer 1 containing "Zwodnicze serce - Robert Murray McCheyne"

Neither of these sermon translations were available on-line.

I also found another Polish web-page "Oni znali swojego Boga" which referred to both McCheyne and William C. Burns.

Another Polish item is "ROBERT MURRAY McCHEYNE - Mlodociany swiety z Dundee" which I found listed here.

Portugueseportugal.png (1861 bytes)brazil.png (2294 bytes)

FÉ SALVADORA - UM DOM DE DEU by Robert Murray McCheyne, tradução livre do Inglês.  This is an on-line sermon based on the verse, "Porque pela graça sois salvos, mediante a fé; e isto não vem de vós, é dom de Deus". Efésios 2:8.  It is found on the web-site posted by Zoênio M. G. Filho of  ARPAV
(Associação Reformada Palavra da Verdade) -
based in Belém, Pará, Brazil.

Also on the same site there is the translation of McCheyne's A Cry for Revival, which in Portuguese is O Clamor por Reavivamento, based on Salmos 85:6, "Não tornarás a vivificar-nos, para que o teu povo se alegre em ti?"

Now on the same site is Betania which is a translation of the first of McCheyne's lectures on Bethany, or the Sickness, Death and Resurrection of Lazarus, his exposition on John chapter 11.  The same lecture in Portuguese is also posted on the web-site of IGREJA PRESBITERIANA DE OSASCO in Brazil, which also contains a translation of M'Cheyne's article on Family Government - Governo Familiar.

In Brazil also, the website of FIEL, a evangelical literature agency which holds to the Doctrines of Grace, includes one M'Cheyne title, "O Amor de Cristo", in their list of books for Portuguese speaking pastors.  The title in English is "The Love of Christ".  It was published by PES, led by veteran missionary Bill Barkley.  FIEL have published more than 120 items in Portuguese, and their titles in Portuguese now include most of the writings of Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones.  A further sermon of M'Cheyne has just been published (June 2002) by PES: "Futuro Castigo", a translation of "Future Punishment".

"Mensajes Biblicos" by R.M.M'Cheyne - (£4.25) is a Spanish title published by The Banner of Truth Trust.

"Años atrás, Andrew Bonar dijo a Robert McCheyne que acababa de predicar del Salmo 9:17: «Los malos serán trasladados al Seol. . . .» McCheyne preguntó: «¿Pudiste predicarlo con ternura?» Lo mismo se puede preguntar de nosotros. ¿Cómo comunicamos tú y yo el evangelio de Cristo a los incrédulos? Dios anhela ablandar nuestros corazones y hacernos instrumentos de reconciliación."  This Spanish quotation was found at El Secreto De La Vida De Oración.

McCheyne.  This web-page provides thirty of his sermons [with more to come] in MS Word format, which can be downloaded individually as compressed ZIP archives, together with a biographical article in the same format.  On the same site there are also archives of sermons and works by eighty other evangelical preachers and teachers ranging from Jay Adams to John Zens.

"Por Qué Dios Es Un Extraño En La Tierra" is a translation of M'Cheyne's sermon "Why is God a Stranger in the Land?".  It was found on the web-site of Vida Gracia Soberana.

Available in PDF format "La Experiencia Interior" is a translation of M'Cheyne's sermon on Romans 7:22-25.  It was found on the web-site of Estudios Bíblicos.  Another Spanish web-site has a version of the same sermon in HTML format.

"GUD svarar på bön" is a Swedish translation of one of M'Cheyne's sermons, which is available on-line at a Christian Apologetics & Theology web-site called Kärlek till Sanningen.   The web-site owned by Jan Johansson also has some Swedish translations of articles by Alan Morrison, and a link to his Diakrisis site.  Looks like a good site tackling many of the modern errors in the religious world.
