I was born in 1948 in Prestbury, Cheshire. My first home was in the Levenshulme district of Manchester. I attended the Acacias Primary School in Burnage.
From 1959, I attended The Manchester Grammar School. During my teenage years I was a member of the Boys Brigade, in the 14th Manchester Company.
In 1966, I obtained a Scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge to read Mechanical Sciences and Electrical Sciences, graduating in 1969 with an honours degree.
Anyone from my school reading this page may like to know that I am registered with Friends Reunited.
While I was at Cambridge University I became a Christian through hearing Rev Leith Samuel preaching on "Why The Cross?". This sermon was one of a regular series of sermons organised by the CICCU which stands for the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Christian Union.
While I was at Cambridge I played an active part in the Christian Union, and took a particular interest in overseas missionary work. During my summer vacations I worked in France with Operation Mobilisation, an evangelical missionary and training society, helping local churches in their literature outreach. During Full Term, for my last two years as an undergraduate, I attended an "Open Brethren" meeting at Roseford Hall in Cambridge. During my first year, I attended Zion Baptist Church, on East Road.
From 1968 until 1974, I was in fellowship at the "Glanton Brethren" meeting at Cromwell Hall in the Levenshulme district of Manchester. This was where I first met Merilyn, now my wife, when she came to Manchester to teach at a school in Gorton.
From 1985 to 1998, I served as the secretary of the 1969 Cambridge Prayer Fellowship, formed to link any members of the CICCU who graduated that year. We keep in touch by means of an annual newsletter.
After graduation, my first job was with Mirrlees Blackstone Ltd, who are manufacturers of diesel engines for marine and industrial applications. I worked there until 1973.
This was the year that I began working for my present employer, now called Philips Semiconductors Ltd, in their factory at Hazel Grove, Stockport, Cheshire, where I am now a senior measurements engineer. Currently I work in the development of protected power MOSFETs for use in the automotive industry. In June 1998, I celebrated 25 years service with the company.
1973 was also the year we were married. My wife is called Merilyn and she comes from Connah's Quay in Flintshire, North Wales. We have two children called Mark & Amy, who were born in 1985 & 1986 respectively. Merilyn teaches junior ages in Primary Education.
From 1975 until 1995 we attended a small Baptist Church in Bramhall, where I served the Lord as a deacon for 15 years, including two (3 year) periods as church secretary and one period as treasurer. It was during this last 3 year period that the original Baptist chapel dating from 1856 was demolished, and in its place a new modern building was erected.
Since 1995 we have been attending St Mary's Church in Cheadle, Cheshire, where the last Rector was Donald Allister, a leading evangelical teacher, and who is now an Archdeacon in the Chester diocese.
I am an avid reader, especially of Christian books. At one time I even ran the church bookstall at Bramhall Baptist.
My theological position is Reformed (ie - Calvinist) and Evangelical (ie - based on the Bible). I hold to the cessationist view regarding the apostolic sign gifts described in the New Testament.
I have a particular interest in Apologetics - the branch of theology especially concerned with the Defence of the Faith.
My interest in Church History, especially with reference to Revivals, motivated me during 1997 to create the web-pages about Robert Murray M'Cheyne.
