Shown here is the construction from start to finish of my own Dax Rush Cosworth kit car. It took over two painful years to build with many hours of cursing, shouting and fighting with the tool box, but in the end it was well and truly worthwhile. Also included here are the final specifications and pictures of my car, along with other cars that are produced by Dax. |

The first job undertaken was to fit the aluminium floor panels to the space frame chassis using adhesive and hundreds of rivets. Amazingly only slight cutting of the aluminium panels was required to make them fit.
Aluminium and fibreglass panels were fitted to the chassis before the chromed front suspension was hung including the standard Ford Cortina brakes. These were later to be changed to AP Lockheed racing billet alloy four pot calipers and 305mm drilled and vented disks. Front and rear light fittings were added along with the small windscreen and surround. Note the wind deflectors on the screen uprights, these were later discarded in favour of side doors. Pedal box was the next item to be fitted. This was a Dax item rather than the more expensive Tilton one. The steering column, cowl, switches and keys were sourced from a Ford Sierra and fitted using an extension to reach the 2.5 turn lock-to-lock quick rack. The seats were hand made with black stitched leatherette using plywood as a pattern. Five point harnesses were then fitted to the anchorage points already on the chassis. A full torneau cover was also handmade to fit the cockpit and boot box. The dashboard was constructed from MDF and covered in leather cloth before having the Stewart Warner gauges fitted in place along with ancillary switches and stainless trim. The dashboard was later changed to a vacuum formed aluminium honeycomb and carbon fibre item. The Ford Sierra Cosworth Motor was sourced in between building the rest of the car but required a major re-build as there were lots of parts missing and damaged. This was sent to Wheelgate Engineering in Lincoln to be sorted...... And it came back all shiny and clean complete with gearbox. All that it required now was a reconditioned turbo unit. The engine was dropped, more like squeezed into the car chassis and then the fun could begin fitting the radiator and plumbing and sorting out the mass of coiled wiring and hoses that any modern fuel injected engine has! The turbotechnics turbo was then fitted along with the polished stainless steel straight through Dax exhaust system and heat shields. It was then off to DVLA to get the car registered, taxed and MOT'd before it could be used in anger.... |
