Cleaning and Preparation

Why: Many models straight out of the packaging still have mould lines or flashing attached to them. These are by-products of moulding process. As the mould is used it becomes damaged resulting in seepage of the casting metal which causes flashing to appear. The older the mould the more flashing will their will be.

How: To remove mould lines and flashing you can use a craft knife, modelling file or snippers. It’s a simple process of carefully cutting away the excess metal. Some models (usually moulded plastic kits) may also have a greasy residue on the surface; this is a mould release agent and should simply be washed of with warm water and washing-up detergent. If you do wash the model be sure that its completely dry before progressing to the undercoat stage.
