Grouter

Native to Ganipres <View System> and often hunted as a trophy by blood sport enthusiasts, the Grouter is named for its long low mating call that sounds a deep rumbling throaty croak. The Grouter is a long sinuous lizard with a wide fanged mouth below small raised eyes, hide colour varies but is usually brown or greenish. It hunts by staking its prey, sliding in close using the water ways of the mangroves and positions itself to leap from the water and strike in one blinding action.

The Grouter is also known for it exceptional cunning and patience, sometimes waiting days in its ambush position before it launches itself at unsuspecting prey. The saying ‘patient as a Grouter’ is a common on Ganipres. Grouters have also been known on rare occasions to hunt in small group, using one to drive prey in the jaws of a second.

While the Grouter spends most of its time in the mangrove waters, the brief matting season is a time that they emerge in numbers to fight for the best mates; this is a period of about 10-12 days during the hottest season on Ganipres and one well known to natives who stay well clear of. It’s also the height of the tourist trade in blood sports and the unwary or over confident usually wind up as Grouter chow.
