Lindow Light Railway

This web page will show the development of my garden railway from bare earth to completion. The idea for this fictional line is based on the real Lindow Moss near Wilmslow in Cheshire. This is famous for the "Bog Man called Pete" and I will give links to info about this ancient man.

Wilmslow and the Lindow Moss

The Lindow Moss has been a source of peat for many years and at one time my uncles owned part of this peat bog and as they were nurserymen and landscape gardeners the peat which was dug out was used by them or sold. I remember helping them to deliver loads of peat to the mainline sidings near Chelford. This railway depicts a line from Lindow Moss via the Row of Trees and Lindow End to the junction with the main line at Chelford.

The beginning!! Well you have to start somewhere..

The Conifer has been removed and the trunk taken out. A water feature with a slate monolith and lights has been placed in the hole. I am about to start laying the track bed. I have opted for digging a trench about 5inches deep which will be lined with sharp sand and concrete edging used to create a firm base. I hope to drill and plug the concrete and screw the track down. I did wonder if "hard as nails" might help fasten the track down, at least temporarily. Progress is being made (slowly)and I now have a "dog-bone" loop almost completed although I have to fasten the track and ballast it. Hope the weather is good at the weekend!!

Billy, my first loco from Roundhouse (to be named "Walter" after my Grandad and Uncle) was collected today (16th May) and run on Dave Billmore's Isle of Axholme Light Railway after less than 4 hours of ownership.

More pictures will follow soon. The track building is progressing slowly and has to be finished for 20th July which is our 30th Wedding Anniversary. The family are coming and its is opening day for the railway.

The weekend went well and the line is now open, Here is a picture of Millie in steam.

I'm intrigued that there's a garden railway called the Isle of Axholme Light Railway. I'm helping author Martin Bairstow with a book on the Railways of North Lincolnshire and any information on this miniature version would be gratefully received.

I especially like how you are calling the steam engine after you Granddad and Uncle that's very endearing. And the link and information about the bog man called Pete made for good reading. The Hard has nails we once used to stick a Garden ornament down, but after being weathered the ornament came unstuck. But it may work fine for your needs but the best way maybe is to do has the instruction book says ........ Any way Best wishes with your endeavours
