Four small Nicaragua fry. Here they are about four weeks old, and approaching an inch in length.

A female Severum tending her eggs which are just hatching. I believe that this is a type of severum which is sometimes called 'green'.

This was my first Jack Dempsey male. He paired for life with my female and raised many broods. Here he is standing guard in the entrance of a large flower pot. They used this pot to breed in, but this meant that it was impossible for me to see the eggs. Although this fish appears to be identical to the other Dempsey shown in the 'posing' page, you can identify them by the subtle variations in the coloured spots around the eyes.

This photograph shows a Jack Dempsey female looking after her young fry. Notice how she has changed her colouration to a deep black; probably so as not to attract the attention of predators. This disappearance of colour is common with cichlid females while they are tending their fry. Males by contrast often stay colourful.

Thanks to Clive Nelson of Blackburn, England for allowing me to use this photo of his fishes.

I have been breeding cichlids for many years but you will have noticed how few photographs I have to prove this. Unfortunately, although I have taken many photographs I have been unable to find more than the ones above of cichlids breeding. Two house moves in the past five years is probably the culprit, and somewhere in my attic there may well be some more. If I find any then I will add them to this site. But, don't hold your breathe!
