| In 1977 many breweries made a special brew to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the wedding of Her Majesty the Queen to Prince Philip. Sometimes a standard strong ale was simply bottled as usual with a specially printed label, but in other cases an ale was brewed specially. The Silver Jubilee beers were usually stong and there was a price premium over the brewer's barley wine, which also was often inside the bottle.
The Association of Bottled Beer Collectors (ABBC) states that there were 71 bottles produced to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Many of these, however, were extremely difficult to obtain because they were not commercially produced and sold to the public. For instance, the Guinness brewery made a batch of bottles and gave them to their staff and pensioners. I can confirm this because I wrote to the brewery and received a written reply to this effect.
A Daily Mail newspaper article in 1981 described how one collector had amassed 67 Silver Jubilee beers. This is good going for a private collector, although he did have an advantage - he was a publican!
My collection consists of 41 bottles plus one virgin label of the Three Tuns public house own brew signed by the brewer Peter Milner: |
