Tougher Customs & Excise Policy on alcohol and Tobacco Smuggling
In their policy to combat the £2.5 billion trade of alcohol and tobacco smuggling from the EU, HM Customs & Excise will now confiscate any vehicle where it's found to be used for smuggling.even when a permitted driver is driving the vehicle and you are not present at the time of detection. Since October 2000, HM Customs Excise have expanded their operations, which has led to the seizure of 25 Motability Scheme vehicles. These Motability Scheme customers are now barred from having another vehicle on the Scheme and through their own actions they have lost their own personal transportation. The simple message is, if you are taking your vehicle to another EU country, you should make sure that you know what your personal allowances are to bring alcohol and tobacco back into the UK. You are also reminded that if you are planning to take your vehicle abroad for any length of time, you must apply to Royal & SunAlliance 'Motability' for a 'Green Card'. This gives you authorisation to drive on the continent. Failure to do so will result in your insurance being invalid.
