The RAC provides a specifically Designed Support package for the Disabled (Your vehicle MUST have a valid Orange Badge provided by your local Social Services Dept.) Response is available as soon as you join.
RESPONSE provides the following facilities
RESCUE/RECOVERY/REFLEX+ = RESPONSE
This service is ONLY available
in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
If
you break down or have an accident, or your car is vandalized the RAC will
try to repair your car on site and/or make it road worthy to enable you
to continue your journey.
If you are taken ill away from home and are unable to drive, you can call the RAC under the "Reflex+" Option, up to 5 people can be taken Home or anywhere else in the UK. The RAC do tell us that they could need a medical certificate for this service, where they imagine you would get one if taken ill I don't know, but they do say that this service will be provided as they see it. Interesting this one, let us know of your experiences.
If
your vehicle is Stolen the RAC will help up to 5 people to the end of their
journey
There are exclusions, so it is important to read the "Terms of Membership" pamphlet.
At Home Start means that the RAC will come out to you if you are more than 1/4 mile away from home, although I have used the RAC at home and been assured that for disabled customers "At Home", means at your home.
The Additional Reflex benefits provide the Disabled Driver with an Automatic Hired Car (1600cc or less), (sadly, no modified vehicles are provided). The hire seems to only cover a three day period. So it is important to get your car repaired within that time if you need a car and do not want to incur extra costs.
Help is available if your car has been Stolen. You MUST report the theft to the Police and get an incident number from them. WARNING the RAC notes advise that this service is only available over 1/4 mile from your home. watch too for any additional costs incurred if you use this part of the service.
Accident services are provided, these seem to be very good and useful for the disabled who are not normally abed enough to cope.
This description of the RAC disabled
RESPONSE package is only intended as an outline to help you decide if it
would suit your needs. We can accept no liability for exclusions or inaccuracies,
but if any are observed, please notify us as soon as possible.
All in all, the package will provide most of the facilities you may need as a disabled person, it all depends on your disability and your needs.
It is worth mentioning that the Medical Support available for the Able Bodied is NOT available for the Disabled, odd but true, perhaps the RAC managers feel that we need more medical aid than they do. I have actually seen my doctor 5 times in 10 years, can they, I wonder say the same. mmmmm.
The package cost me
£69 in 1996, although I did not use the service during that year,
the peace of mind it provides is worth the cost. If the cost were more
however, for local low mileage drivers it may be worth while costing the
service a local garage could provide. The average garage in our area would
charge about £40 for a call out, on tope of the cost of the work,
do cost everything if you can to get the best deal for your needs.
I know it is hard to envisage your needs, so here are a few based on my own.
Home
Start including vandalism damage, flat or damaged tyres, mechanical failure
assessment, all at home, including on the road.
Fast response, an hour
is poor service as far as I am concerned.
Response anywhere in your own area as well as within the UK, in case you need to travel.
No penalties for changing
a wheel for the disabled
(do able bodied people
understand our needs)
Suitable Hire car provided
delivered and collected during any repair period.
(it would be nice
if this were for as long as needed, but lets not be greedy)
Accident and vandalism support taking the worry from the driver anywhere in the UK.
Get you (including passengers) home
There would be more of course, but the above is the basics of our need I think.
If you have any comments regarding this issue, do contact us, let us know of any experiences you may have had, not only with the RAC, but other organizations too.
