There are many St Aubins in France and the one with which Emsworth is twinned, St
Aubin-sur-Mer, lies on the coast of Normandy in the Département of Calvados, about 16
miles from Caen.

In 1985 the mayor of St Aubin, Pierre Lettelier, visited Emsworth for an exploratory
meeting with the Borough's mayor, Tessa Daines, with a view to establishing a twinning
link between the two towns. He left full of enthusiasm for further contact with Emsworth
and ever since a reciprocal visit by a local delegation to St Aubin in 1986, the link has
flourished.

This long-standing connection between the two towns has brought an increasing mutual
understanding of the communities involved, a great deal of pleasure and many lasting
personal friendships. This was no more clearly in evidence than on the 10th Anniversary
of the Twinning in 1996, when a large English party was welcomed to the celebrations in
St Aubin and planted an English oak tree in the grounds of the Mairie as a symbol of the
continuing friendship between the peoples of the two towns.

The Association maintains an active social programme, including family events, in
between exchange visits so that the Emsworth members can get to know one another
and share their interests in France.
