The surname Forbes was assumed from the lands of Forbes, Co. Aberdeen,
N.B., about the middle of the
13th century, granted by Alexander II of Scotland, to the progenitor
of this noble family.
JOHN DE FORBES, first on record a man of rank and importance, in the reign of William the Lion, of Scotland. Father of
FERGUS DE FORBES, from whom all families of this name have descended. The eldest son and successor,
ALEXANDER DE FORBES lost his life in the defence of the Castle
of Urquhart, in Murray, against Edward I,
of England. His son,
ALEXANDER FORBES attached himself to the fortunes of King Robert
the Bruce. Fell at battle of Duplin,
1332, and was succeeded by his son,
SIR JOHN FORBES, KT., eminently distinguished in the reigns of
Roberts II. and III.,
m. Elizabeth d. of Kennedy, of Denure (anc. house of Cassilis), and
had four sons, viz:
ALEXANDER (SIR), his successor and 1st Lord.
WILLIAM (SIR), anc. of Lord Pitsligo.
JOHN (SIR), anc. of Forbes of Culloden, &c.
ALEXANDER the younger anc. of Forbes of Brux, &c.
SIR JOHN d. 1405, and was s. by his eldest son,
SIR ALEXANDER FORBES, elevated to the peerage of Scotland by
James II., prior to 1436, by the
title of Baron Forbes m. Lady Elizabeth Douglas,
d. of George Earl of Angus and grand d. of Robert III.,
d. 1448, was s. by his eldest son,
JAMES, 2nd Baron, m. Lady Egidia Keith, dau. of William 1st Earl
Marischal, by whom he had one daughter
and three sons.
WILLIAM, 3rd Baron, m. Christian d. of Alexander 1st Earl Huntley,
from whom are descended
the Barons Forbes (see Burke's Peerage)

PATRICK, of Corse, armour bearer to James III. and Baron o'Neil, by charter, 1476. His son,
DAVID, called Trail The Axe, Laird of Corse, and baron o'Neil,
m. Elizabeth sister of Paniter (or Panter),
of Newmanowells, secy. of state to James IV.; and had issue.
PATRICK FORBES, of o'Neil, Corse infeft in 1554, m. Marjory,
d. of Lumsden, Laird of Maider Cushire,
and was s. by his eldest son.
WILLIAM, m. Elizabeth, d. of Sir Alexander Strachan, of Thornton,
chief of that ancient name, by whom
he had issue.
PATRICK, Bishop of Aberdeen, b. 1564.
WILLIAM, Laird of Craigievar.
JOHN, minister of Alford, m. Christian, d. of Barclay, of Mathers;
and had issue, COLONEL ARTHUR,
PATRICK, afterwards Bishop of Caithness.
ARTHUR (SIR), Bart of Castle Forbes in Ireland, ancestor Earls of Granard
(see Burke's Peerage), and
two other sons and five daughters. He was s. by his eldest son.
RIGHT REV. PATRICK FORBES, of Corse, Bishop of Aberdeen for 17 years,
m. Lucretia, d. of Spens,
of Wolmerston, of Fife, and had two sons; William died without issue,
and John, he was succeeded by his
eldest surviving son, the learned Dr. John Forbes, of Corse. Bishop
Forbes died in 1635, and his male line
failing with his grand children, the representation and estates reverted
to the descendants of his brother William.
WILLIAM FORBES, of Craigievar, 2nd son of William Forbes, 4th
Baron o'Neil and Laird of Corse, born
1566, died 1635; m. Margaret Udward d. of the Lord Provost, of Edinburgh,
and had issue.

Peerage, etc)

JAMES (CAPTAIN). And three daughters.
JAMES (CAPTAIN), the youngest son of Sir William Forbes, of
Craigievar, m. a sister of Burnet, of
Cowcardie, by whom he had issue,
JOHN, born 1668, m. Sarah Robertson, d. 1759, and was buried
at Kilmodan, Argyleshire. He lived through
six reigns. His son,
JAMES, Clergyman, at Kilmodan, b. 1700 m. Beatrix, d. of George
Campbell, of Craignish Castle, Argyleshire.
He died 1769, and had issue,
DOUGALD, born at Craignish Castle, 5th August 1759, m. Elizabeth
Green; died 9th January 1820, and
left issue.
ELIZABETH, died unmarried.

SARAH, m. John Campbell, and had issue.
MENZIES, d. unmarried.
CECILIA, m. Dr. H.T. Mostyn, 47th Regt., and had issue.
JESSIE, m. Major J. Rogers, and had issue.

Highlanders, and
died 17th June, 1882, leaving issue.
