This shows the line of decsent from John Paske of Stragwell in Suffolk through Col Gresham Paske. It was taken from a pedigree owned by Col Gresham Paske and copied by Soanes Freeman Gardner in 1921.

This was sent to me by Susie Villiers-Smith and I have copied it to this page

NOTE:

The following particulars of the life of  THOMAS PASKE  the elder, are taken from the Dictionary of National Biography.

“He was son of William Paske, vicar of Hendon, Middlesex.  William Paske left Hendon 1611 for Ashdon, Essex, he was prebend of Oxgate in St. Paul’s Cathedral and died Feb 15th 1639/40.”

“Thomas  Paske was scholar of Clare Hall, Cambridge and fellow between Xmas 1603 and 1612;  B.A. 1608;  B.D. 1613.  He succeeded Wm Paske as vicar of Hendon 1611, chaplin to James, Marquis of Hamilton, 1621;  elected Master of Clare Hall and incorporated D.D. 1621:  Archdeacon of London 1625 and Vicar of Gt and Little Hadham, Herts and also of St. Mary’s, Bermondsey.  Prebendary of Ulles-kelf in York Minster, 1628;  and a prebendal stall in Canterbury, 1636.”

“He took up residence in Canterbury and the Fellow of Clare Hall petitioned the King for leave to elect a new Master but the election was delayed some years.  He became sub-dean of Canterbury;  he drew attention to the ravages of Cromwell’s soldiers in the cathedral and it was he who was called on to deliver the keys to the Parliamentary Army.”

“Under the Protectorate he was deprived of all his benefices and bore his losses cheerfully for 18 years.  At the Restoration he was re-instated to Mastership of Clare Hall, Hadham and two prebends, but he surrendered the Mastership to his son-in-law Dr. Theophilus Dillingham who had been already elected to the post in 1654 (Dr Dillingham 1613-1678 was buried in St. Edwards Cambridge).”

“Thomas Paske had great ability as a teacher, his wife, Anne had property at Hadham where she lived with four children after her husband’s ejection.  His name is variously spelt Passke, Paske and Pasque.”

He died at Hadham 1662 and my daughter, Celia has copied the following entry from the parish register of Great Hadham -

“The Reverend, learned and religious Thomas Paske D.D. departed this life, having been minister of Much Hadham by the space of 37 years and upwards, and was interred in the Chancel Sept 20th, 1662”.

There is no monument to him, or any of his family, in the church.

Walters Hist of Suffolk, pt II, pg 141, says he was Vice Chancellor of Camb 1632 and that he refused the offer of a bishopbric.

Clutterbuck’s Hist of Herts says “he was learned, prudent, pious and cheerful and that once, at Cambridge, 2 Bishops, 4 Privy Councillors, 2 Judges and 3 Physicians, all old pupils, visited him in one day”.

The Pedigree Roll states that his son Thomas Paske, the younger, was also Master of Clare Hall.  I find no confirmation of this, thought in 1667 he, with two others, presented to the College a silver ewer and bason, weighing 156 oz, he giving 88 oz, this plate the College still has.  In Finchingfield Ch, Essex, a monument states that Thos Paske was rector there in 1702 and I think this is the same man, as his son George was rector of Finchingfield.  The monument states that his daughter married a curate but was widowed in one year and her son became a well-known etcher, his name was Brown.*

Other entries under Paske in the Dict. of Nat. Biography are Thomas Paske, of Hadham, admitted Clare Coll 1692, Fellow of Clare LL.D. and M.P. for University of Cambridge from 1713 till his death 1720.

Also Wm Paske or Pasche, a musician, flourished about 1500, a book of his Masses in library of Caius Coll, Cambridge.  Wm Paske, died 1525, and left instructions for his burial in St. Margaret’s, Friday St, London.

Wm Paske 1561 incumbent of All Saints, Kingdon, Somerset.

*  Aunt Helen Paske has some of his etchings (1921).  I understood there was such a monument from F. Hammond Clark whose cousin Percy Moyes was rector of Finchingield, but when I went to the church in 1922 I could find no  monument in the church or gravestone outside.  I think the statement about Brown must be in the Parish Register.
