The invasion of Afghanistan
The US/British
invasion of Afghanistan is a monstrous attack on defenceless people -- some of
the very poorest on earth -- it contributed to a humanitarian catastrophe and
it is being pursued for abominable purposes.
POP QUIZ:
1. Give one piece of
evidence, apart from US/UK government/military say-so, that supports the claim
that this is a ``war on terrorism''.
2. Give one piece of
evidence that it is not a straightforward invasion of Afghanistan and the
surrounding area, an occupation with massive military bases and the standard
training of a local mercenary army and insertion of a puppet leader, with the
aim of securing US domination of the region. If you can't answer questions 1
and 2, ask yourself
3. Do I believe it is a ``war on
terrorism''? Why?

Welcome the new imperialism
Extraordinary article from the Guardian website of the text of a talk
by Oxford historian Niall Ferguson 31/10/01. He is apparently politically
extremely right wing but is so truthful about certain things that it is rather
startling. For example he admits that globalisation is just a euphemism for
imperialism.

ACTIONS
YOU CAN TAKE
A
better world is possible. We can make a difference by
o Informing ourselves by
reading widely
o Joining a group campaigning
against war and racism. Fay Dowker maintains an email list of University of
London folk who oppose US/UK aggression (contact f.dowker@qmul.ac.uk).
o Demonstrate: the only thing
the US/UK governments will respond to is the threat that the political cost of
their actions is too high. That means we must take our protest to the streets.
A demonstration called by the Stop the War
Coalition will be held in central London if the US/UK attack Iraq. Be
Ready.
