Letter sent to the two church wardens 3rd Dec.2000. There appears not to be a PCC, issues normally dealt with by the PCCs are, in the case of Holy Trinity Church, handled by the wardens. 3rd Dec.2000 Church Of The Holy Trinity, Knaresborough. Planned mobile phone base-station installationDear Mr. I….. Following widespread concern about the safety of microwave radiation from mobile phones and base-stations The Minister for Public Health directed The National Radiological Protection Board to set up an independent expert group to report on the safety of mobile phones. The report of the Group (The Stewart Report) is to be the basis on which The National Radiological Protection Board will review current safety limits and which the Government will base mobile phone policy. Conclusions of the report include: it is not possible at present to say that exposure to mobile phone radiation, even at levels below national guidelines, is totally without potential adverse health effects, and that the gaps in knowledge are sufficient to justify a precautionary approach; particular protection should be given to children. The Department of education has already implemented this precautionary approach, mobile phone base-stations are now not allowed on school land nor is the beam of greatest intensity, from a base-station adjacent to school land, allowed to fall on school land. The beam of greatest microwave intensity meets the ground between 50 and 200 metres from the base-station antenna, depending on mast height. If irradiating children at school for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week has yet to be proved safe, then it is not possible to say that exposure for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when at home is safe for children. This, the church would be doing to the community living in close proximity. We appreciate that the church needs to raise funds, but is it church policy to put profit before the health of the community it is meant to be serving. Should the church not be taking a lead in showing that profits do not come first? Yours truly,
