Sue Dent in Sunderland at 18:36:47 Saturday September 29 2001
Hi Pam, just received the latest journal, many thanks. Anybody else researching any of my rapidly expanding surnames list. A'LEE (Talland), POINTER (Lansallos), HENDER Pelynt and now WENMOUTH in Lanteglos by Fowey/St.Veep. I'm having particular problems with a John HENDER b.1839, in the 1851 census he gives his birthplace as Liskeard/St.Neot. That covers a lot of moorland. I know he was not baptised in St. Neot before 1841. Does anyone out there have any likely candidates?

Debi in Newcastle at 15:38:5 Saturday September 29 2001
I've just started researching my Family tree and have found links to Cornwall, Daniel James (1851:Trore - is this Truro?) who married Elizabeth ? (1853: Calstock). Not sure whether they married in Cornwall but they ended up in Sunderland and had at least one child John (1880). Would love to hear from any related James? Great site by the way.

Why did I have to start my family research when everyone who could have helped is now beyond assistance. I am Back to the 1700s and at this rate I will be at least 100 years old before I get much further, with the law of diminishing returns. All I want is the birth of John Vyne(Viant, Vine etc)around Veryan Cornwall about 1760, now thats not too much to ask is it? Voices from the grave will be accepted.

Sean Jose in South Korea at 14:47:33 Saturday September 8 2001
Great site, very interesting. I hail from Camborne(sometimes spelt with a 'u') and went to Roskear and Camborne School in the late 60's and 1970's. I was a useless student! I left Cornwall around 1983 and have been teaching English in Asia ever since. I would die for a 'St. Ives shop pasty!' I hope to return to South-West Cornwall soon for a holiday. 'Er, answer me this: Are the words - teasy(moody), 'ark(listen) and 'giss-on with 'e(I don't believe you) Cornish? And why isn't the Leeds United and sometimes England goal stopper, Nigel Martyn, on the 'Famous Cornish People' list?

Val Cooper in Vancouver, B.C., Canada at 23:18:43 Thursday September 6 2001
What an interesting site. My Cornish interest is with the Hockin family of St. Austell. My 3xgt. grandfather John Hockin was christened there in June 1819, he married Mary Vercoe (a twin) in St. Austell June 1843 and worked as a carpenter in Charlestown. My 2xgt. grandfather Thomas Hockin moved to Portsea in the mid-1800s where he worked as a shipwright at the naval dockyards. Anyone out there have a connection with this family - I'd love to hear from you. Regards to all. Val Cooper

Sue Dent (nee A'Lee) in Sunderland at 0:29:3 Saturday July 14 2001
Brilliant website, I'd also like to say a big thanks for the burials in Cornwall info on Guy Etchell's site @Rootsweb. Missing home even after 18 years in the North-east. I still get goosebumps going across the Albert Bridge towards home! I'm researching the A'LEE family in the Polperro area (Talland and Lansallos Parishes mainly). So far I know of only one other person who is doing so, surely there must be someone else out there, we married into a lot of families over the centuries! Certainly as a child everyone we met in Looe or Polperro seemed to be related, however tenuously. Anyway thanks again for a great site, I look forward to the day when you're accepting new members again. Meanwhile, I'm sure to be ordering some parish transcripts, it'll have to be after the school holidays, I doubt if I'll have any spare cash for the next few weeks - mum = cashpoint.

ED.SCULL in PERTH, Western Australia at 6:52:38 Friday July 13 2001
Family interest is PASCOE, BOWDEN. Locality interest is CONSTANTINE. My mother's side of the family stems from a PETER PASCOE(b.app 1826, residing in Tresidder, Constantine in 1838, Occupation: Miner/Labourer, Father: William Pascoe, Mother: Mary ?, Married ANN BOWDEN 8/9/38, Father: Benjamin Bowden, residing in Goolgilling 1838, Marriage witnessed by Thomas Tresidder and William Tremayne) PETER PASCOE appears to have emigrated to Victoria, Australia around the 1850's, probably chasing gold. Sons: JOHN PASCOE (b.17/8/44 in Constantine, Cornwall) and PETER (b. app 1847, ?) JOHN PASCOE went on to marry CAROLINE HICKS in 1872 (b. Cornwall) and MARIA TRUAN THOMAS in 1873 (b.Cornwall) and settled in the Ballarat, Bendigo and EAGLEHAWK areas of Victoria. The latter marriage was witnessed by a MAY P.PASCOE (? sister, cousin) This connection with Cornwall was a real surprise to us. Any info on background and family connections, emigration etc.. would be great and would assist further searching from Perth. Visited recently: too quick, too short, loved Constantine, Eden Project etc..

Hi, looking forward to reading your research names. Our families HARVEY, LEGGO, BENNETTS, MARTIN all came from the St Just area mid 1800s, and our families HOCKING and CRAGO came from Truro and Kea, similar time. I think our goldrush in Victoria brough them here as a lot of our family were miners, (probably tin) Our website is http://ourhistoryweb.tripod.com Please visit my site and/or contact me if you have these names in your family - Robyn

Duchy of Cornwall May 24, 2001 ATTENTION - Those persons whose ancestors are, or were, from the Duchy of Cornwall will be interested in another Internet site. Webmaster Alan Richards provides an excellent array of information for the "Lovers of Cornwall and all things Cornish." His Cornish "Chin-wag" Forum has a very HOT discussion in progress concerning England's refusal to acknowledge the sovereignty of this Celtic nation, and what should be done about it. This [CFS] Web site has a Link to Alan Richards site, click Links, then page way down to Useful & Interesting Links, it’s the last entry. How good is it? Well, Pam Drake admits she couldn't go to sleep at night without surfing over to Alan's site.

I am the direct descendant of the Rector of St. Mellion's Parish in 1639, the Reverend Matthew RANDALL. Matthew was the son of the Mayor of Bath, Somerset when he was posted to your part of Old England. He married Margaret TRAVISA of Ladock two weeks after his installation and their only child, John, born in 1641, came here to America in 1660. You've got a neat site. I came to learn where Saint Mellion's was after finding today's St. Mellion's is a golf course and resort hotel. I hope to visit Cornwall the next time I return to England. It's really scenic, but I guess you knew that!

I checked your website as the result of extended contact with Diane and Gerry Grant-Salmon, members of your society. It is a well done web site and I believe I will refer to it frequently. My Cornish ancestor was James Shugg b. in Sithney in 1818 who emigrated to the US in the 1840's and ended up in California in 1849. I have been doing extractions from LDS microfilms of original parish records, Bishop's Transcriptions, and other transcriptions by people like Martin Furze. I am extracting only data for those surnames in my ancestry - including Blewett, Bawden/Bowden, Eathorne, Harvey, Hodge, Ivey, King, Matthew, Oates, Pryor, Pearce, Retallack, Roberts, Rowe, Sandoe, Shugg, Tregembo, and various spellings thereof. I invite contact by those interested in any of these surnames, and will gladly exchange data including copies of my extractions by email by attachment. This is a lbor of love and I am happy to share.

I found your site from a link to another site. My late husband was Keith William Kelynack Harvey, and his ancestors arrived in Australia in 1849. His great grandfather was Thomas Kelynack HARVEY son of Pascoe Ellis HARVEY and Jane Tonkin KELYNACK. Thomas married Mary Thomas OATS. If any HARVEYs go back to Rev Francis HERVEY of Breage, married to Mary [or Maria] Yorke, they are related to our line. I would be interested to hear from anybody connected.

Sandy Lyons in Melrose, Florida at 19:8:1 Monday March 19 2001
Hi Pam! You haven't heard from us lately since life in general is keeping us very busy. No much time for researching family roots, I dare say. We have thought much about you lately with the Hoof and Mouth emergency much in the news here. We have reservations (unpaid for until end of this week) for a trip to England and Wales in May BUT...we are considering letting them go in favor of a trip next year. What do you think? With all the sites closed and the countryside off limits, it might be wise to postpone our vacation. We are bringing our grown children and would love for them to experience our native land to its fullest. As you may note, I have a NEW email address. Let me know what you think about our trip and whether Cornwall is a bit of a stretch for a good time this year. Glad to hear of your growing herds!

Read your rabbit article. Could hear your English accent. I grow up on a farm. My two brothers in law have a large number of cattle and my baby brother(31) has sheep. It would kill them in all ways to have to do in thier animals, would be the end of thier farms. They all are holding on in this drought. My one brother inlaw has not had rain in three years to bring the grass on. Our ancestors came from the mid to southern parts of Cornwall, copperminers it appears.

Samuel and Jane (nee Pengelly) Arthur emigrated to South Australia aboard the Duchess of Northumberland in 1847. They married in Lanlivery in 1844. Sam was the son of Samuel, a tinner, sometime resident of St Blazey, we believe. Jane was the daughter of John Pengelly, of Lanlivery. Would be a buzz to hear from distant family in Cornwall. Was pleased to find this site, and would have joined CFS ... a pity membership seems closed.

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCES....I have my JAMES famiy history back to 1600 however I have one mystery on my hands. Great Uncle John Henry (Jack) JAMES. b. 1896, Redruth, St. Just, Cornwall, disappeared in 1923, after his father, William JAMES, b. 1849, mine manager of Wheal Basset, lived at Nancothan House in Redruth, died. John Henry JAMES attended Blundell School, joined possibly the Royal Berkshire Regt. was twice a casualty of war during 1917-1918 time period. He disappeared after getting himself into suggested dodgy business trying to pass himself off as his deceased father for his own financil gain. He may have been front page news during 1921-1923 London Times, although we have nothing to substatiate this. He may have emigrated to South Africa.? before 1931.
