Fragments 2001

              Ballsgame

A swift decade or two ago,

swapping blu-blazored, cap-tipping humility

for knobbled boots and billowing shorts,

I pitched in on the green stuff

with the other boys.

When they let me near

I kicked muddy footballs;

Or, blocked, tackled and playing rough,

I kicked their balls instead.

"not a sport,"shook the head.

Now, a decayed too much later,

I play another game: call it business, its still

Pitching about with green stuff.

And I still kick balls.

Only now people say

"he’s bright. A man who nows

how to get things done." So success

Thanks education.

And my new head dosent give a thought

To what the old one called sport
